The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has expelled Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, amid ongoing investigations into his handling of a rape and murder case and alleged financial misconduct. The IMA announced that the decision was made by its disciplinary committee due to the “disrepute” brought to the profession by Ghosh’s actions.
Dr. Ghosh is under scrutiny for his role in a tragic incident on August 9, where a trainee doctor was found raped and murdered in the hospital’s seminar hall. The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) team from Delhi conducted a polygraph test on Ghosh as part of the investigation.
In its statement, the IMA highlighted grievances from the victim’s family regarding Ghosh’s lack of empathy and mishandling of the situation. The Bengal state branch and other medical groups have also called for action against him due to the scandal’s impact on the medical community.
The CBI has filed an FIR against Ghosh, prompted by a Calcutta High Court order to investigate alleged corruption at the medical college. The court has given the CBI three weeks to report on their progress. The Enforcement Directorate is also probing financial irregularities linked to Ghosh’s tenure.
