Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of swift justice in cases involving violence against women, stating it enhances their sense of safety. His comments came in the wake of widespread outrage over recent horrific incidents, including the rape and murder of a 31-year-old woman in Kolkata and assaults on young girls in Thane.
Addressing the National Conference of District Judiciary in New Delhi, Modi highlighted that prompt legal action not only addresses societal concerns but also reassures women about their safety. He stressed the need for efficient coordination within the criminal justice system to ensure timely justice.
Modi’s statements followed a letter from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee calling for stricter central laws and severe punishments for such crimes. He also pointed out the substantial investments made in judicial infrastructure over the past decade, which aim to reduce delays in justice.
The Prime Minister underscored that the judiciary plays a critical role in upholding constitutional values and ensuring justice, while noting the significant progress made in modernizing India’s legal system.
