Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the launch of a direct flight service between India and Brunei, following his recent bilateral discussions with Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. This announcement marks a significant step in enhancing connectivity between the two nations.
During his visit, which makes him the first Indian Prime Minister to travel to Brunei for a bilateral meeting, Modi and Sultan Bolkiah engaged in comprehensive talks covering various sectors including trade, investment, defense, and cultural exchanges. Modi expressed his gratitude for the Sultan’s warm hospitality and highlighted the longstanding cultural and historical ties between the two countries.
In his remarks, Modi celebrated the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Brunei, noting that the direct flight will further strengthen these ties. He emphasized the ongoing growth in bilateral relations under the Sultan’s leadership and the broader vision of India’s Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific strategy.
The discussions also touched on collaboration in areas such as Information and Communications Technology (ICT), fintech, cybersecurity, and renewable energy. Both leaders underscored their commitment to combating terrorism and reinforcing the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Modi’s visit included a special reception by Crown Prince Al-Muhtadee Billah, a visit to the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, and the inauguration of the new Indian High Commission chancery. These engagements underscore the deepening relationship and mutual respect between the two nations.
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the importance of the visit as a milestone in the 40-year diplomatic relationship, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing cooperation in various fields.
