As the new year approaches, North India braces for intense cold wave conditions, accompanied by rain and snowfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts for severe cold weather in regions including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan from December 30 to January 2.
Drop in Temperatures Across Uttar Pradesh
IMD predicts a significant dip in temperatures across Western and Eastern Uttar Pradesh by December 29 as rain clears. Atul Kumar Singh, an IMD scientist, stated that minimum temperatures are expected to drop by 3-6°C in the next 2-3 days as the weather turns dry from December 30.
Persistent Snowfall in Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh will continue to experience light to moderate spells of rain and snow till the morning of December 29. Heavier snowfall is anticipated in isolated areas like Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, and Lahul-Spiti. The state is also likely to face dense fog and a fresh wave of cold from December 30, particularly in the lower hills and plains.
Heavy Snowfall Disrupts Life in Kashmir
Kashmir has been hit by the season’s heaviest snowfall, disrupting daily life, including air, rail, and road transport. The Jammu-Srinagar national highway remains closed, and train services between Banihal and Baramulla have been suspended due to snow-covered tracks. Air traffic to and from Srinagar has also been severely affected.
Record-Breaking Rain in Delhi
Delhi recorded 41.2 mm of rainfall within 24 hours, marking the highest single-day December rainfall since 1923. The IMD has issued an orange alert for dense fog on Sunday, advising caution. Light rain or drizzle was observed in isolated areas, and the weather is expected to turn foggy in the coming days.
