A Heartfelt Reunion: Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup Legends Meet PM Modi in Colombo, Hail His Inspiring Leadership

RR Team, April 6, 2025April 6, 2025

During his two-day visit to Colombo, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a heartfelt and memorable meeting with Sri Lanka’s iconic 1996 ICC Cricket World Cup-winning team. The interaction stirred emotions and nostalgia, especially for those who witnessed the historic moment when the Sri Lankan squad lifted their first-ever World Cup trophy nearly three decades ago.

The meeting was filled with mutual admiration and warmth. PM Modi, known for his deep appreciation of sports, expressed his delight in meeting the cricket legends who once captivated millions with their unmatched spirit and performance. On social media, he shared his joy, calling the encounter a special moment with a team that had inspired countless fans across the globe.

Present at the meeting were legendary cricketers like Aravinda de Silva, Sanath Jayasuriya, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Chaminda Vaas, Kumara Dharmasena, and Marvan Atapattu. Their captain from 1996, Arjuna Ranatunga, couldn’t attend as he is currently abroad. Nevertheless, the presence of his teammates rekindled cherished memories of their World Cup triumph.

The Sri Lankan players were equally moved by the gesture and praised PM Modi’s leadership. Romesh Kaluwitharana expressed sincere gratitude for the continued support India has offered Sri Lanka in times of need, especially during crises. Marvan Atapattu described the meeting as a dream come true, calling PM Modi a leader who has propelled India to great heights.

Kumara Dharmasena spoke warmly, saying it was the first time he had seen a leader like PM Modi—someone who, as the head of a neighboring giant, has extended considerable support to Sri Lanka. Aravinda de Silva described the Indian leader as widely respected and admired for his accomplishments, especially being elected Prime Minister for three consecutive terms.

Chaminda Vaas shared that they discussed the 1996 World Cup and PM Modi impressed them with his detailed knowledge of cricket. He referred to Modi as South Asia’s most powerful leader. Sanath Jayasuriya noted how the Prime Minister explained his vision for India’s development, adding depth and perspective to the interaction.

The 1996 World Cup remains a cherished chapter in Sri Lankan sports history. In that final in Lahore, Sri Lanka defeated Australia by seven wickets with 22 balls to spare. Aravinda de Silva’s unbeaten 107, combined with strong performances from Asanka Gurusinha and Arjuna Ranatunga, sealed their place in history. That moment is still etched in the hearts of cricket lovers, and this meeting with PM Modi brought it all back—this time wrapped in a spirit of regional friendship and mutual respect.

The encounter wasn’t just a celebration of cricketing history but also a touching reminder of how sports can bridge nations and bring people together through shared pride and admiration.
