Aadhaar Must for MGNREGS Wage Payments

RR Team, August 13, 2025August 12, 2025
In an unprecedented celebration of innovation, the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) under NITI Aayog hosted Mega Tinkering Day on Tuesday, bringing together more than 10,000 schools and 4.73 lakh students from across India for a synchronized, nationwide hands-on project. The initiative marks the country’s largest school-based tinkering event to date, signaling a bold step in grassroots innovation and collaborative learning.

Nationwide Participation in Real-Time

Held simultaneously in schools across all 35 states and union territories, the event was conducted virtually, enabling students from regions as diverse as Leh, Ladakh, and Kargil to remote villages in aspirational districts, and from the far northeast to the southern tip of Kanniyakumari, to participate together. The challenge for the day was to design and assemble a functional DIY vacuum cleaner using readily available materials from Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs).

The project was guided by a real-time online instructional session, allowing students to learn scientific principles and execute the build step-by-step, no matter their location. The AIM team itself joined the activity, building vacuum cleaners alongside students.

A Milestone in India’s Innovation Journey

Deepak Bagla, Mission Director of AIM, called the event a “milestone demonstration of the power of grassroots innovation” and highlighted its alignment with the Prime Minister’s vision of Viksit Bharat. “No other country in the world has mobilized innovation at this scale inside its school ecosystem,” he said, adding that empowering young minds today is key to shaping solutions for the nation and beyond.

Since its inception, AIM has established over 10,000 ATLs equipped with advanced tools such as 3D printers, robotics kits, and IoT devices, giving students from middle to high school access to modern technologies and real-world problem-solving experiences.

Beyond a Single Day

While Mega Tinkering Day was a high-energy, one-day event, AIM sees it as a launchpad for the upcoming academic year’s innovation activities. It served as a rallying moment for students, educators, mentors, higher education institutions, and industry partners to collaborate on projects that foster creativity, critical thinking, and entrepreneurship.

The event also reinforced AIM’s long-term vision to develop a generation of innovators who are not just consumers of technology but creators and problem-solvers, ready to contribute to India’s development goals and global innovation ecosystem.

From Classrooms to National Movement

With lakhs of students simultaneously engaged in innovation, Mega Tinkering Day demonstrated the potential of scale in educational transformation. The program’s success underscored how a well-coordinated, technology-enabled initiative can turn classrooms into collaborative hubs of invention, where learning is active, tangible, and community-driven.
