AAP Criticizes BJP Over Delay in Naming Delhi CM, Warns of Political Instability

RR Team, February 18, 2025February 18, 2025

The political atmosphere in Delhi remains tense as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) continues to press the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its delay in naming a Chief Minister, even ten days after the election results. AAP leaders have criticized the BJP’s indecisiveness, warning that the national capital might see multiple leadership changes within the next five years, similar to past instances when the party changed three Chief Ministers in a single term.

Addressing the media, AAP’s Delhi convener, Gopal Rai, pointed out that the ongoing internal power struggle within the BJP reflects deep divisions that could lead to an unstable government. He suggested that even if the BJP manages to finalize a name, the infighting within the party could result in persistent efforts to replace the chosen leader, making governance in Delhi uncertain. Outgoing Chief Minister Atishi also took aim at the BJP for not yet declaring a Chief Minister, highlighting the party’s apparent struggle to find a suitable candidate.

The BJP, however, has dismissed these claims, arguing that AAP should focus on resolving its internal issues instead of attacking the ruling party. Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva countered AAP’s accusations, stating that Atishi, despite being the Acting Chief Minister, continues to make reckless statements that undermine the dignity of her position. He further alleged that several senior AAP leaders and multiple-term MLAs were unwilling to accept Atishi as the Leader of the Opposition, questioning her political experience and leadership abilities.

Amidst these political tensions, AAP has announced plans to restructure its Delhi unit. Gopal Rai outlined a roadmap for strengthening the party, starting with a series of meetings with district secretaries, Assembly presidents, and organization ministers. Through these discussions, AAP aims to address internal weaknesses and enhance its organizational structure. The party has also planned a broader review involving provincial and state-level office-bearers, evaluating their roles during the election campaign and preparing for future challenges.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Delhi’s leadership, AAP has assured that it will continue to play a strong role in the Assembly as a responsible opposition while mobilizing its organizational network to advocate for public concerns. As the BJP faces mounting pressure to announce a Chief Minister, political observers are keenly watching how the situation unfolds and whether Delhi will witness stability or a continuation of power struggles in the coming years.
