ACITI Partnership: India, Australia & Canada Unite

RR Team, November 23, 2025November 23, 2025
New Delhi / Canberra / Ottawa — India, Australia and Canada today announced the formation of the Australia-Canada-India Technology and Innovation (ACITI) Partnership, a trilateral initiative to deepen cooperation on critical and emerging technologies, green energy innovation, and resilient supply chains. The joint statement, issued on 22 November 2025, sets a roadmap for officials to convene in the first quarter of 2026 to operationalise collaborative projects.

Why ACITI matters

The new partnership responds to strategic and economic shifts that have underscored the need for diversified supply chains, secure access to critical minerals, and coordinated technology policy. ACITI aims to leverage the complementary strengths of its members — India’s large market and growing tech ecosystem, Australia’s resource and research capacity, and Canada’s advanced R&D and clean-technology experience — to foster secure and sustainable development pathways.

Core focus areas

The trilateral agreement identifies four primary pillars: green energy innovation, resilient supply chains (including critical minerals), responsible adoption of artificial intelligence, and cooperative research & development. These pillars reflect shared priorities around net-zero transitions, resource security and inclusive digital transformation.

Officials said the initiative will specifically explore joint projects on battery recycling and second-life batteries, urban mining for critical minerals, cross-border clean-energy pilots, and shared R&D platforms for AI tools that can drive public-good outcomes such as healthcare diagnostics and climate modelling.

Critical minerals and supply-chain resilience

Securing sustainable access to critical minerals — essential for batteries, semiconductors and clean-energy technologies — is a headline objective for ACITI. The partners intend to promote circularity through recycling, urban mining and second-life battery initiatives to reduce dependency on single-source suppliers and strengthen regional resilience.

By combining Australia’s raw-material capacity with Canada’s processing expertise and India’s manufacturing scale, the partnership aims to create value chains that are both environmentally responsible and strategically diversified.

Green energy innovation and net-zero pathways

ACITI will emphasise green-energy research and demonstration projects that can accelerate decarbonisation. Proposed pilots include modular renewable microgrids, green-hydrogen value-chain linkages, and technologies for grid resilience. The partners also signalled intent to collaborate on financing models and technology transfer mechanisms that make clean-energy adoption affordable for developing markets.

Responsible AI and technology adoption

The trilateral statement notes the importance of examining “the development and mass adoption of artificial intelligence to improve the lives of our citizens.” Partners will explore ethical frameworks, interoperable standards, capacity-building for AI literacy, and joint research on AI applications for public sectors like health, agriculture and disaster response.

Process and timeline

Officials from India, Australia and Canada will meet in the first quarter of 2026 to chart concrete projects, governance structures and financing arrangements. The initial intergovernmental consultations will determine pilot projects, research partnerships, and private-sector engagement models to translate the ACITI vision into on-the-ground collaboration.

Strategic context and reactions

The ACITI Partnership aligns with broader international efforts to diversify technology collaboration beyond bilateral ties. Analysts view the trilateral move as a strategic complement to existing partnerships, seeking to balance supply-chain security with climate goals and responsible innovation. Civil society and industry groups have welcomed the focus on circularity and skills development but expect clear implementation plans and transparent environmental safeguards.
