Advanced Technology: The Cornerstone of India-US Future Relations, Says NSA Sullivan

RR Team, January 6, 2025January 6, 2025

United States National Security Advisor (NSA) Jake Sullivan, on his farewell visit to India, highlighted advanced technology as the foundation for future ties between the two democracies. Sullivan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several Indian officials on Monday, discussing the evolving India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and key collaborative initiatives.

Key Highlights of Sullivan’s Visit

1. Meeting with PM Modi

Prime Minister Modi shared his optimism about the partnership, stating on X, “The India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership has scaled new heights, including in technology, defence, space, biotechnology, and Artificial Intelligence. Looking forward to further strengthening our ties for global good.”

2. Farewell Discussions with NSA Ajit Doval

Sullivan met his Indian counterpart, NSA Ajit Doval, at Sardar Patel Bhawan, where they reviewed progress under the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET). Sullivan praised Doval’s vision, calling him instrumental in advancing bilateral cooperation:

“iCET is a people’s initiative, but it owes much to one man—my Indian counterpart Ajit Doval. His vision has brought our nations closer, leveraging advanced technologies to make the world a better place.”

3. Civil Nuclear Cooperation

Sullivan revealed that the US is finalizing steps to remove longstanding regulatory barriers, paving the way for enhanced civil nuclear collaboration between Indian nuclear entities and US companies.

4. Focus on iCET

The third round of iCET discussions formed a key part of Sullivan’s visit. This initiative, launched by Prime Minister Modi and President Joe Biden, aims to foster collaboration in critical sectors like Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors, biotechnology, and defence innovation. Sullivan’s visit builds on the momentum of the second iCET meeting held in June 2024.

Sullivan’s Meeting with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar

Earlier in the day, Sullivan also met External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Reflecting on the meeting, Jaishankar posted, “Valued the openness of our conversations over the past four years. Appreciated Sullivan’s personal contribution to strengthening the 🇮🇳🇺🇸 partnership.”

Strengthening the Partnership for the Future

Sullivan emphasized the importance of advanced technology in the future of India-US relations, stating that it would drive both countries towards shared prosperity and global progress. He noted the deep personal bond he shares with Ajit Doval, underlining the collaborative spirit that has guided the partnership.

As Jake Sullivan concludes his tenure, his visit marks a reaffirmation of the India-US commitment to mutual growth, innovation, and the development of technologies aimed at benefiting the world at large.
