AIIA Pharmacology Lab Earns Triple ISO Certification from BIS

RR Team, November 8, 2025November 10, 2025
New Delhi, November 8: In a landmark achievement for Indian Ayurveda research, the Pharmacology Laboratory of the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), New Delhi, has received triple ISO certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The laboratory has been accredited with IS/ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System), IS/ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System), and IS/ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational Health and Safety Management System).
This recognition establishes AIIA’s Pharmacology Laboratory and Small Animal House Facility among India’s few Ayurveda research institutions to meet globally accepted standards of quality, environmental responsibility, and workplace safety.

Milestone in Ayurveda Research Excellence

The certification was conferred during a BIS event on Quality Management System Certification in New Delhi, attended by representatives from the Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) and other institutions. The two-stage BIS audit assessed AIIA’s adherence to quality, environmental, and occupational standards tailored to pharmacological and animal research settings.

Through the adoption of an Integrated Management System (IMS), AIIA has standardized its laboratory processes, enhanced ethical compliance, and improved operational efficiency in pre-clinical research on Ayurvedic formulations. The IMS approach ensures that laboratory operations align with international benchmarks for safety and sustainability.

Enhancing Quality, Safety, and Sustainability

The initiative brings multiple institutional benefits:

  • Quality Management System (QMS): Streamlined experimental procedures ensuring reproducibility and accuracy.
  • Environmental Management System (EMS): Implementation of eco-friendly practices including waste reduction and energy optimization.
  • Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS): Strengthened safety culture with ergonomic lab design, risk assessment, and regular audits.

These measures, officials noted, reflect AIIA’s vision to establish Ayurveda research practices that are both scientifically rigorous and environmentally conscious.

Leadership Speaks: Commitment to Global Standards

Prof. (Vaidya) P. K. Prajapati, Director of AIIA, described the achievement as “a proud moment for the institution” and a reflection of its constant pursuit of excellence. “Integrating globally recognized ISO standards with traditional Ayurvedic systems reinforces our commitment to quality, safety, and sustainability,” he said, adding that the certification sets a benchmark for other Ayurveda institutions in India.

Mrs. Lalthan Pari, Scientist E at BIS, emphasized that Quality Management Systems must be a priority for all research organizations to uplift operational standards and institutional reliability. Dr. Subhash Kaushik, Director General of CCRH, highlighted that quality, commitment, and continuous improvement are the three pillars that sustain institutional progress. Former BIS Scientist Dr. R. K. Kain was also present during the event.

AIIA: Bridging Tradition with Modern Science

The All India Institute of Ayurveda is an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Ayush, Government of India. Accredited with NAAC A++ and recognized as the first NABH-accredited public sector Ayurveda hospital in the country, AIIA operates a 200-bed referral hospital, 12 specialty departments, and 45 specialty clinics.

Its integrated approach combines classical Ayurvedic wisdom with contemporary research methodologies, contributing to evidence-based healthcare and policy innovation in traditional medicine.

The ISO certification of its Pharmacology Laboratory marks another milestone in India’s effort to align traditional medicine with global scientific and quality standards.

Setting Global Benchmarks in Ayurveda

By meeting the rigorous requirements of BIS certification, AIIA reinforces India’s position as a leader in standardized Ayurvedic research. The institute’s dedication to ethical practices, sustainable operations, and scientific validation continues to inspire similar initiatives across the country.

The event was attended by Additional Professors Dr. Galib, Dr. Bidhan, and Dr. Vijay Kumar, who represented AIIA and contributed to the implementation of the certification framework.
