New Delhi, June 1, 2025 —
Air Marshal Jasvir Singh Mann has officially taken over as the Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO) of the Western Air Command of the Indian Air Force (IAF), one of the most strategically significant commands of the IAF. The announcement was made on June 1, 2025, by the Press Information Bureau.
With over three decades of distinguished service, Air Marshal Mann brings with him deep operational experience and a strong record of leadership in various critical roles across the Indian Air Force.
A Decorated Career in Service
Commissioned into the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot on December 16, 1989, Air Marshal Mann is an alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy (NDA). He has clocked over 3,000 flying hours, primarily on fighter aircraft, making him one of the most experienced aviators in the force. A qualified Pilot Attack Instructor, he has been involved in both combat flying and advanced training operations.
During his career, he has commanded a frontline fighter squadron and has served as the Chief Operations Officer at a forward air base. He later went on to become the Air Officer Commanding at a premier fighter station, further enhancing his operational credentials.
Leadership Roles and Global Engagements
Air Marshal Mann has held several key administrative and strategic roles at both Air Headquarters and Command Headquarters. He played an instrumental role in leading joint military exercises with foreign air forces. Notably, he directed major training operations with the Republic of Singapore Air Force in 2017 and the United States Air Force (USAF) in 2018, showcasing India’s growing defence cooperation with global partners.
His leadership experience extends to administrative functions as well. He has served as the Senior Officer-in-Charge of Administration and as the Air Defence Commander in the Central Air Command, where he managed a wide spectrum of operational and support responsibilities.
Academic and Strategic Credentials
Beyond his flying and command experience, Air Marshal Mann is a highly educated military professional. He is an alumnus of two of the world’s top defence institutions — the Defence Services Staff College in India and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London, UK. These academic credentials reflect his strategic acumen and readiness to take on high-level leadership roles within the IAF.
Prior Role and Honours
Before his new appointment, Air Marshal Mann was serving as the Director General (Weapon Systems) at Air Headquarters, where he was responsible for overseeing and guiding the development and deployment of weapon systems across the IAF.
In recognition of his exceptional service, he has been awarded two of India’s prestigious military honours — the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and the Vayu Sena Medal (VM). These awards reflect his consistent excellence in service, leadership, and dedication to the nation.
Looking Ahead
As the Senior Air Staff Officer of the Western Air Command, Air Marshal Mann now assumes a critical role in overseeing air operations and strategic planning along India’s western borders. The Western Air Command is one of the largest and most vital operational commands in the IAF, with responsibilities spanning several sensitive and strategically important regions.
His vast operational experience, global exposure, and proven leadership are expected to further strengthen the command’s capabilities and readiness.
