Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari Assumes Charge as Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force

RR Team, May 2, 2025May 3, 2025

Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, a highly decorated and deeply respected officer of the Indian Air Force, has officially taken charge as the Vice Chief of the Air Staff on May 2, 2025. His journey to this esteemed position reflects a lifetime of service, courage, and dedication to the nation.

A proud alumnus of Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC), Dehradun, Air Marshal Tiwari’s commitment to service began early. He graduated from the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasala, in June 1985, earning the prestigious President’s Gold Medal. Commissioned as a Fighter Pilot in June 1986, he went on to accumulate over 3,600 hours of flying on various aircraft, marking him as one of the most experienced and versatile officers in the force.

Throughout his distinguished career, he has served in critical roles that required not just skill but also vision and leadership. As a Qualified Flying Instructor and an Experimental Test Pilot, his expertise proved invaluable, particularly during the Kargil conflict in 1999 where he played a pivotal role in operationalising the ‘Litening’ Laser Designation Pod. His contributions to the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) project, including its Final Operational Clearance, reflect his unwavering commitment to strengthening India’s self-reliance in defence technology.

Air Marshal Tiwari’s leadership extended beyond the skies, serving as the Air Attache in Paris between 2013 and 2016, where he represented the Indian Air Force with distinction. In his role as Deputy Chief of the Air Staff and more recently as the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the South Western Air Command, he demonstrated strategic foresight and operational acumen.

In recognition of his exceptional service to the nation, he has been honoured with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (2025), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (2022), and Vayu Sena Medal (2008). Each of these awards is a testament to his valor, professionalism, and enduring contribution to national defence.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Air Marshal Tiwari is known for his humility and deep-rooted values. He is married to Mrs. Richa Tiwari, a postgraduate in Cytology, and together they are proud parents of two daughters. His life and career are a source of inspiration for the armed forces and the nation as a whole.

As he steps into his new role, the Indian Air Force and the country stand united in extending heartfelt wishes for continued success and strength to Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari. His legacy of excellence and dedication will undoubtedly guide the IAF into a future of even greater achievements.
