Akal Takht Urges Patna Sahib to Retract Religious Misconduct Decree, Emphasizes Unity in Sikh Doctrine

RR Team, May 23, 2025May 23, 2025

In a significant development that underscores the importance of unity and respect within the Sikh faith, the Akal Takht—considered the highest temporal seat of Sikh authority—has directed the management of Takht Sri Patna Sahib to immediately withdraw its recent decision that declared two senior jathedars as “tankhaiyah,” or guilty of religious misconduct. The statement comes just a day after the “Panj Pyaras” from Patna Sahib made the declaration, sparking concern across the Sikh community.

The Akal Takht Secretariat emphasized that, according to the Sikh Rehat Maryada (the Sikh code of conduct), its authority stands supreme among the five Takhts and that any edicts issued from Amritsar are binding on all other Takhts. It stated firmly that no group of Panj Pyaras has the jurisdiction to challenge its supremacy, reminding all institutions of the need for adherence to tradition and mutual respect within the Panth.

The controversy stems from a chain of disagreements between Takht Sri Patna Sahib and Akal Takht over previous directives involving two priests, Bhai Baldev Singh and Bhai Gurdial Singh, who were both instructed to either fulfill spiritual duties or be relocated, as per an order dating back to December 2022. These instructions were reportedly ignored by the Patna Sahib management, prompting intervention by Akal Takht once again.

Sources within the Akal Takht also expressed concern over certain personal conduct issues involving the same individuals who are now attempting to challenge the central authority. Complaints ranging from alleged violations of Sikh tenets to inappropriate personal behavior were cited, suggesting deeper fissures than the current incident reveals.

This episode is especially painful for many in the community who look to their religious institutions not just for spiritual leadership but for collective strength. At a time when unity is needed most, such internal discord unsettles the faith and raises questions about discipline, reverence, and the balance between tradition and autonomy.

With this directive, the Akal Takht has not only reasserted its position but also extended an olive branch—an opportunity for course correction. It has called on Takht Sri Patna Sahib to maintain harmony by upholding shared values and abiding by the principles that bind the Sikh Panth together.

As the Sikh community watches closely, many hope that cooler heads prevail and that dialogue, not division, will guide the way forward. The Akal Takht’s firm yet measured approach reflects its enduring commitment to preserving unity, dignity, and spiritual order in the face of internal strife.
