Akash Prime Successfully Tested by Army in Ladakh

RR Team, July 17, 2025July 17, 2025

The Indian Army has once again demonstrated its defence preparedness by successfully testing the Akash Prime air defence system in the high-altitude region of Ladakh. This strategic move is part of India’s continued efforts to enhance its indigenous missile capabilities.

What Is Akash Prime?

Akash Prime is the upgraded version of the original Akash surface-to-air missile system. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), it features an advanced indigenous Radio Frequency (RF) seeker. This enhancement allows it to strike aerial targets with precision, regardless of adverse weather conditions or terrain challenges.

The Akash missile system has long been a pillar of India’s medium-range air defence. With this latest upgrade, it becomes even more effective at intercepting high-speed targets.

High-Altitude Trials in Ladakh

According to defence sources, the Indian Army’s Air Defence Corps collaborated with DRDO scientists to conduct the trials. The tests took place at an altitude exceeding 15,000 feet in eastern Ladakh, under rarefied atmospheric conditions.

During the two-day exercise, Akash Prime scored two direct hits on fast-moving aerial targets, proving its advanced targeting accuracy. Officials noted that its performance was consistent even in the thin air and harsh environment of the Himalayas.

Strategic Role in Army Regiments

The Akash Prime system is set to be inducted into the third and fourth regiments of the Indian Army’s air defence units. With its enhanced precision, it offers improved protection for mobile, semi-mobile, and static installations.

The system can be deployed up to 4,500 metres above sea level and can neutralize threats within a 25–30 km range.

Combat-Proven in Operation Sindoor

A defence official revealed that Akash Prime was first deployed during Operation Sindoor in response to aerial threats from Pakistan. The missile demonstrated exceptional accuracy, reinforcing confidence in its operational readiness.

Strengthening Indigenous Defence Technology

Akash Prime is a significant milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance in defence technology, aligning with the government’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision. It shows how home-grown systems can match or surpass imported alternatives.

This development also opens the door for potential international interest. DRDO officials have indicated that countries in South Asia and the Middle East have shown curiosity about acquiring the system.

Looking Ahead

With its improved seeker technology and combat capabilities, Akash Prime adds a robust layer to India’s air defence architecture. As the Indian Army continues to modernize, systems like these will play a critical role in national security, especially along sensitive borders like Ladakh.

Conclusion

The successful trials of Akash Prime in Ladakh signal a strong message. India’s military is not only equipped but also evolving with state-of-the-art indigenous systems. As geopolitical tensions rise, systems like Akash Prime become essential in securing the skies above the nation.
