Kashmir Schools and Colleges Shut Today Amid Heavy Rains

RR Team, September 3, 2025September 3, 2025
Srinagar, September 3: In view of the continuous heavy rains across the Kashmir Valley, the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, Anshul Garg, announced that all schools and colleges will remain closed today, September 3, 2025. The move, he said, is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.
Confirming the order to local media, Garg stressed that the decision was made after assessing the prevailing weather situation and potential risks to commuters. “In view of inclement weather conditions, schools and colleges across Kashmir division shall remain closed today as a precautionary measure,” he said.

Heavy Rains Trigger Alerts Across Valley

The decision comes at a time when the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the next 24 hours. Authorities have warned of possible flash floods, landslides, and waterlogging in low-lying areas, prompting a series of advisories to the public.

Reports indicate that several highways, including the Jammu–Srinagar national highway, have already been closed for traffic due to landslides triggered by continuous downpours. In addition, local administrations have been instructed to remain on high alert and extend support wherever required.

Precautionary Measures and Safety Concerns

Officials said the closure of educational institutions was aimed at minimizing travel during unsafe conditions. Students, teachers, and staff often commute long distances, and heavy rains have made several roads risky for travel. The administration also advised parents to ensure children remain indoors and avoid unnecessary movement in rain-hit areas.

In flood-prone districts such as Bandipora and Anantnag, local authorities have already issued flood advisories. The Irrigation and Flood Control Department has directed its officers on flood duty to remain at their posts, as water levels in several rivers and streams have risen sharply.

Impact on Daily Life

The sudden change in weather has disrupted normal life across the Valley. Many residents reported difficulties in reaching workplaces due to blocked roads and overflowing drains. Farmers have also expressed concern about potential damage to standing crops if rains persist for longer durations.

Adding to the crisis, reports emerged from Rajouri district where a wall collapse claimed the lives of a mother and daughter, underscoring the dangers of unstable structures during heavy downpours.

Authorities Urge Vigilance

The administration has appealed to people to follow official advisories and avoid venturing near rivers, streams, or landslide-prone zones. Disaster management teams and emergency services have been put on standby across the division.

More than ever, the authorities are urging residents to remain cautious. “The next 16 hours are crucial as heavy rainfall is expected to continue. Citizens should stay updated through official channels,” an IMD bulletin noted.

As Kashmir continues to grapple with extreme weather, the closure of schools and colleges is being seen as a necessary step to prioritize safety over disruption. Further updates are expected as the weather evolves during the day.
