Amit Shah Unveils Bharat Taxi Cooperative Ride App

RR Team, February 4, 2026February 4, 2026
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Shri Amit Shah is set to launch “Bharat Taxi,” India’s first cooperative-based ride-hailing platform, on February 5, 2026, at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi. The initiative marks a significant step in transforming the country’s mobility sector by placing drivers at the centre of ownership, decision-making, and profit-sharing.

Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sahkar se Samriddhi,” Bharat Taxi represents a new model of citizen-centric transportation built on cooperative principles. The platform aims to provide an indigenous, ethical alternative to aggregator-driven ride services that often leave drivers with limited control over earnings and working conditions.

Drivers as Owners: ‘Sarathi Hi Malik’ Model

At the core of Bharat Taxi lies the principle of “Sarathi Hi Malik,” under which drivers, known as Sarathis, are not merely service providers but shareholders and owners of the platform. This cooperative ownership structure ensures that profits are directly distributed among drivers rather than being siphoned off as commissions.

Registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002, Bharat Taxi operates on a zero-commission and surge-free pricing model. Drivers retain full freedom to work on other platforms as well, as the cooperative does not impose exclusivity clauses.

Honouring Top Sarathis and Strengthening Welfare

During the launch programme, the top six performing Sarathis from the platform’s soft launch phase will be honoured for their contributions. They will be awarded share certificates, reinforcing their ownership stake in the cooperative.

In addition, each honoured Sarathi will receive a personal accident insurance cover of ₹5 lakh and a family health insurance cover of ₹5 lakh. These measures underline the platform’s emphasis on long-term social security and dignity of labour.

Women Safety and Empowerment at the Forefront

Bharat Taxi places strong emphasis on women’s safety and empowerment. The “Sarathi Didi” and “Bike Didi” initiatives encourage women to join the mobility workforce in a secure and supportive environment.

More than 150 women drivers have already joined the platform, marking a meaningful step toward inclusive employment and safer travel options for women passengers across urban and semi-urban regions.

Rapid Growth and National Expansion Plans

Since its establishment on June 6, 2025, Bharat Taxi has witnessed rapid growth. Over three lakh drivers have joined the platform, with more than 10,000 rides being completed daily. User registrations have crossed the 10 lakh mark, reflecting growing public trust.

Approximately ₹10 crore has already been distributed directly to drivers. The platform currently operates support centres at seven locations in Delhi, offering emergency assistance and operational support.

The cooperative plans to expand to all States and major cities within the next two years, establish dedicated support centres nationwide, and integrate more deeply with India’s digital public infrastructure.

Strengthening the Cooperative Ecosystem

The launch event will also witness the exchange of nine Memoranda of Understanding with public and private stakeholders to enhance digital integration, safety mechanisms, and service delivery.

According to the Ministry of Cooperation, Bharat Taxi is envisioned as a replicable model that demonstrates how cooperatives can successfully operate in technology-driven sectors while ensuring fairness, transparency, and shared prosperity.

More than 1,200 Sarathis from across the country are expected to attend the launch, highlighting the platform’s growing national footprint and confidence among driver-owners.
