Anmol Gagan Maan Quits Politics, Resigns as MLA

RR Team, July 19, 2025July 19, 2025
Chandigarh, July 19, 2025 — In a surprise move, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Punjab minister Anmol Gagan Maan has stepped down from her political career. She resigned from her post as MLA from Kharar and announced her complete exit from politics.

Resignation Submitted to Punjab Assembly Speaker

Maan submitted her resignation letter to Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Saturday. In her message posted on X (formerly Twitter), she confirmed that her decision to resign from politics was heartfelt and final.

“With a heavy heart, I have decided to quit politics,” she wrote in Punjabi. “My resignation from the post of MLA may be accepted. I extend my best wishes to the party and hope the Punjab government meets the people’s expectations.”

A Short but Significant Political Career

Anmol Gagan Maan entered politics through the AAP and made headlines when she won the Kharar seat in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. A popular singer before politics, she quickly rose through the ranks and was inducted as a Cabinet Minister in the Bhagwant Mann government.

She held key portfolios including:

  • Tourism and Culture
  • Investment Promotion
  • Labour
  • Hospitality

However, in 2024, Maan was among four ministers dropped during a cabinet reshuffle. Though she stayed quiet about the reasons then, her complete resignation from public life today has reignited curiosity and speculation.

Why Did Anmol Gagan Step Away?

The AAP leader has not disclosed specific reasons for her decision. This silence has sparked several theories—from internal party disagreements to personal motivations. However, no official statement has hinted at any controversy.

Party insiders have remained tight-lipped, maintaining that it was her personal decision.

Reactions Pour In

Reactions from political circles were swift. Several leaders from both ruling and opposition parties acknowledged her contributions. AAP sources praised her commitment to governance, while opposition voices raised concerns over instability within the ruling party.

Political analyst Jaskaran Singh noted, “Anmol Gagan Maan was seen as a youth icon for AAP. Her exit from politics just three years after becoming MLA is certainly unexpected and deserves introspection.”

AAP Faces Leadership Vacuum in Kharar

With her resignation, the Kharar Assembly seat now stands vacant. This could lead to a by-election unless AAP moves swiftly to appoint a new candidate. Maan had won the seat with a significant margin in 2022, turning the constituency into an AAP stronghold.

It remains to be seen how the party handles this sudden leadership gap, especially with the Lok Sabha elections on the horizon.

From Stage to State Politics

Before entering politics, Anmol Gagan Maan was a well-known Punjabi folk and pop singer. Her shift to public service was initially met with skepticism, but she managed to earn credibility through performance and sincerity in her ministerial duties.

She became one of the few female faces in the Punjab cabinet and was often praised for her grassroots engagement and clean image.

Closing Thoughts

Anmol Gagan Maan’s exit from politics brings an end to a unique journey—from performing on stage to holding office in the Punjab government. While her reasons remain private, her departure leaves behind questions and a sense of void in the state’s political landscape.

As Punjab gears up for upcoming challenges, the ruling AAP will need to regain its footing in Kharar and beyond.
