Army Officer Assaults SpiceJet Staff Over Baggage Row

RR Team, August 3, 2025August 3, 2025
A SpiceJet flight incident has triggered national outrage after a senior army officer allegedly assaulted four airline staff in Srinagar over a cabin baggage dispute.

What Happened at Srinagar Airport?

The incident occurred on July 26, 2025, during boarding of flight SG-386 from Srinagar to Delhi. SpiceJet claims a senior Army officer carrying excess cabin luggage refused to comply with airline protocols. He allegedly turned violent after being told he couldn’t carry 16 kg of cabin baggage — more than double the permitted 7 kg limit.

According to SpiceJet, the officer forced his way into the aerobridge without clearance and had to be escorted back by CISF personnel. What followed was described by the airline as a “murderous assault.”

Staff Seriously Injured in Assault

SpiceJet issued a statement saying four of their ground employees were injured in the attack. One staff member suffered a spinal fracture, another was knocked unconscious, and a third bled from the nose and mouth after being kicked in the jaw while assisting a fallen colleague.

All injured employees were rushed to the hospital and are still undergoing treatment. The airline has called the injuries “grievous” and demanded strict action from authorities.

Official Complaint and FIR Filed

A formal complaint was filed, and a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered with the local police in Srinagar. SpiceJet has also informed the Ministry of Civil Aviation and initiated the process to place the officer on the no-fly list as per aviation safety rules.

In their official communication, the airline highlighted the incident as a major security breach and urged the Ministry to take strict and urgent action.

Violation of Aviation Security Protocols

The accused allegedly bypassed standard boarding checks and violated aviation security procedures. According to the airline, he became physically aggressive when asked to either reduce his cabin luggage or pay the additional charges.

This confrontation not only caused injuries but also delayed the flight and created panic at the boarding gate.

Why This Incident Raises Alarm

This isn’t just a customer service dispute. It reflects the urgent need for better protection of airline ground staff and strict enforcement of aviation rules. SpiceJet’s move to bring the issue to the central government highlights a growing concern across the Indian aviation industry: employee safety.

While passengers are expected to comply with security and safety norms, this case demonstrates how quickly a routine enforcement can spiral into serious violence.

Public Reactions and Next Steps

The public response has been mixed. While some online users expressed disbelief that a senior Army officer could behave in such a manner, others have demanded transparency in the investigation and swift action.

If proven guilty, the accused officer could face legal consequences and permanent inclusion on India’s no-fly list — a measure designed to prevent unruly behavior in the skies.

SpiceJet’s Strong Stand

In its letter to the Ministry, SpiceJet emphasized the “brutal nature” of the assault and asked the government to set an example. The airline stated:

“Such violent acts against airline employees not only disrupt operations but threaten the lives of ground personnel who serve passengers every day.”

As the investigation proceeds, this case could set a precedent for how passenger misconduct — regardless of status — is handled in India’s aviation sector.
