Ashwini Vaishnaw Inspects Vande Bharat Sleeper Train in Delhi

Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, on Saturday inspected India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train at New Delhi Railway Station, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of long-distance rail travel in the country. The inspection comes ahead of the train’s official flag-off by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi later this month.

Focus on Passenger Safety and Comfort

During the detailed inspection, Shri Vaishnaw examined the sleeper coaches closely, reviewing seating and berthing arrangements, modern interiors, and advanced passenger convenience systems. Special emphasis was laid on safety features and onboard amenities designed to enhance the travel experience for overnight passengers.

The Union Minister interacted with senior railway officials and technical teams, reviewing the train’s engineering standards and certifying that the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is fully ready for commercial operations after completing all mandatory trials and testing procedures.

Advanced Safety and Hygiene Features

The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is equipped with automatic sliding doors, CCTV surveillance across all coaches, and the indigenous KAVACH safety system, which enhances operational safety and collision avoidance. Improved fire safety mechanisms and disinfectant technology further strengthen passenger security.

Indian Railways has also introduced innovative toilet designs to improve hygiene standards and prevent water splashes, underlining the national transporter’s renewed focus on cleanliness and passenger comfort.

Route, Capacity, and Technical Specifications

The first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will operate on the Guwahati–Howrah route, connecting Assam and West Bengal through a modern overnight rail service. The 16-coach train comprises 11 AC three-tier coaches, four AC two-tier coaches, and one AC first-class coach, with a total passenger capacity of approximately 823.

Designed as a semi-high-speed train, it has a design speed of up to 180 kmph and features advanced suspension systems and ergonomic interiors for superior ride comfort on long journeys.

Region-Specific Culinary Experience

In a unique passenger-centric initiative, Indian Railways has curated region-specific cuisine for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train. Trains originating from Guwahati will serve authentic Assamese dishes, while those starting from Kolkata will offer traditional Bengali delicacies, ensuring a culturally rich dining experience onboard.

This approach reflects Indian Railways’ effort to blend technology with regional diversity and enhance overall passenger satisfaction.

Flag-Off by Prime Minister This Month

With trials, testing, and certification successfully completed, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is set to be flagged off by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi in January 2026. Railway officials informed the Union Minister that all operational and safety parameters have been met.

The new sleeper variant is expected to redefine overnight rail travel in India by offering faster travel times, modern amenities, and world-class safety standards.
