ASI to Maintain 3,685 Monuments; NCF Boosts Heritage PPPs

RR Team, December 4, 2025December 5, 2025
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) currently undertakes conservation, maintenance and visitor-amenity works at 3,685 ancient monuments and archaeological sites of national importance across India, the government said in an official release. These efforts include routine repairs, pathways, landscaping, drinking water and toilet facilities as and when resources permit.

Antiquities Repatriated A Continuing Effort

Since 1976, India has successfully retrieved 655 antiquities from foreign countries, reflecting ongoing international cooperation to recover cultural property. The return of artifacts remains a priority as part of broader efforts to protect the nation’s material heritage.

NMMA: A Central Repository for Built Heritage and Antiquities

The National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities (NMMA), established in 2007, has catalogued an extensive corpus of heritage data publishing records for over 11,400 built heritage sites and more than 12.46 lakh antiquities on the NMMA portal. This centralised database supports planning, research and transparent access for scholars and policymakers.

National Culture Fund: Mobilising Private Support for Heritage

The National Culture Fund (NCF), created in 1996 as a trust under the Charitable Endowment Act, aims to mobilise additional resources through public–private partnerships (PPP) for conservation and amenity development at heritage sites. Donors can specify projects and locations; approved projects are implemented in coordination with ASI, following norms prescribed by NCF and ASI.

How Conservation Projects Are Delivered

Conservation works for centrally protected monuments are planned as part of ASI’s programme and executed by its circles and specialised wings. Where NCF-funded PPP projects are involved, a project implementation committee  including ASI and donor representatives  oversees progress and compliance with conservation standards. The government clarifies that, so far, no pilot has been launched to fully hand over conservation of centrally protected monuments to private entities.

Public Amenities and Community Access

Beyond structural conservation, ASI installs visitor amenities such as toilets, drinking water points and safer walkways to improve access while protecting archaeological contexts. Maintenance is continuous and scheduled according to each site’s conservation needs and funding availability.

Data-Driven Heritage Management

The NMMA’s published dataset and the NCF’s project pipeline enable evidence-based prioritisation: identifying high-impact interventions, planning heritage tourism clusters and enabling targeted investments in conservation and community-led livelihoods. The NMMA portal offers searchable records for researchers and citizens.

Looking Ahead: Partnerships and Transparency

Officials say the combined approach  state-led conservation by ASI reinforced by targeted PPP funding through the NCF and transparent national datasets via NMMA  strengthens heritage protection while offering opportunities for responsible public engagement and sustainable tourism development. Citizens and potential donors can view official information on the Press Information Bureau and NMMA portals for further details and project opportunities.
