Ayurveda’s Guide to Stronger Bones on World Osteoporosis Day

RR Team, October 20, 2025
New Delhi, October 20, 2025: As the world marks World Osteoporosis Day 2025, the Ministry of Ayush has spotlighted Ayurveda’s preventive and restorative approach to strengthening bones and combating fragility. This initiative highlights the need for early awareness and lifestyle-based intervention to address osteoporosis—a condition affecting millions worldwide, especially elderly and postmenopausal women.

Osteoporosis, often called a “silent disease,” weakens bones over time and increases the risk of fractures in areas like the spine, hip, and wrist. The disease often remains undetected until a fracture occurs, making preventive care vital. Ayurveda, with its centuries-old wisdom, offers holistic solutions that blend diet, herbal therapy, yoga, and lifestyle regulation for stronger bones and graceful aging.

Ayurveda’s Perspective: Understanding Osteoporosis as ‘Asthi Saushirya’

In Ayurvedic understanding, osteoporosis aligns with the concept of Asthi Saushirya—a condition caused by the imbalance of Vata dosha, leading to decreased bone density and strength. This interpretation aligns closely with modern science, which attributes osteoporosis to hormonal changes and mineral loss over time.

Prof. Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General of the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), emphasized that the ancient system offers effective ways to prevent and manage osteoporosis. “Ayurveda’s emphasis on balanced nutrition, early intervention, and lifestyle harmony provides a natural and sustainable path to bone health,” he said. CCRAS is also conducting research on formulations like Laksha Guggulu and Pravala Pishti to validate their role in improving bone density.

Key Ayurvedic Measures to Strengthen Bones Naturally

The Ministry of Ayush and CCRAS have outlined several traditional methods that can be easily incorporated into modern lifestyles to preserve bone health:

  • Rasayana Therapy (Rejuvenation): Rejuvenating formulations help delay bone degeneration and boost skeletal strength when adopted early.
  • Snehana (Therapeutic Massage): Massages with medicated oils such as Mahanarayana Taila, Dashamoola Taila, and Chandana Bala Lakshadi Taila nourish deep tissues and enhance bone vitality.
  • Herbal Formulations: Classical preparations like Maha Yogaraj Guggulu, Pravala Pishti, and Mukta Shukti Bhasma are traditionally used to support bone regeneration and healing.
  • Vata-Pacifying Diet: Ayurveda recommends foods such as horse gram, garlic, green gram, ginger, and ash gourd, along with fruits like mango, grapes, and pomegranate, to maintain bone health.
  • Yoga and Gentle Exercise: Regular practice of yoga asanas like Tadasana and Vrikshasana improves flexibility, posture, and circulation, which are essential for maintaining bone density.

Empowering Preventive Health Through Ayurveda

The Ministry of Ayush has urged citizens, especially older adults and women, to integrate Ayurvedic principles into daily life. Preventive healthcare through Ayurveda not only strengthens bones but also promotes vitality, balance, and mental well-being. By adopting a holistic Ayurvedic lifestyle, individuals can reduce the risk of bone fractures and live healthier, more active lives.

World Osteoporosis Day 2025 serves as a timely reminder that traditional systems like Ayurveda complement modern medicine in preventing lifestyle disorders. The Ministry’s initiative underscores India’s growing focus on integrative healthcare models that merge scientific validation with time-tested wisdom.

As global health experts continue to explore sustainable ways to combat osteoporosis, Ayurveda’s holistic approach—focusing on balance, nutrition, and mindfulness—offers a comprehensive, preventive, and empowering path forward.
