Ayush Ministry Boosts Research & Integration Efforts

RR Team, July 30, 2025August 1, 2025

The Ministry of Ayush is making major strides to strengthen scientific research, innovation, and integration of traditional systems with modern medical science. With the launch of the AYURGYAN Scheme and advanced collaborative research centres at AIIMS, Ayush is entering a transformative era.

Establishing Apex Research Councils for Each System

To ensure robust scientific development, the Ministry has established five apex research bodies:

  • CCRAS – Ayurvedic Sciences
  • CCRUM – Unani Medicine
  • CCRH – Homoeopathy
  • CCRS – Siddha System
  • CCRYN – Yoga & Naturopathy

These councils focus on clinical research, drug standardization, pharmacology, and medicinal plant studies. They also conduct outreach programs like the Tribal Health Care Research Programme and Swasthya Rakshan initiatives, serving remote and vulnerable communities.

AYURGYAN Scheme: Fueling Innovation in Ayush

To promote innovation, the AYURGYAN Scheme has been launched. It offers financial support to government and private research institutions, medical colleges, and universities.

This central sector scheme empowers institutions to focus on priority research areas in Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homoeopathy, further boosting the sector’s credibility and evidence base.

Impressive Research Output Across Ayush Councils

The impact of these efforts is already visible. Here’s a snapshot of research studies undertaken and published by the councils in the last three years:

  • CCRAS (Ayurveda): 189 studies undertaken, 522 published
  • CCRUM (Unani): 104 studies undertaken, 484 published
  • CCRH (Homoeopathy): 184 studies undertaken, 88 published
  • CCRS (Siddha): 32 studies undertaken, 195 published
  • CCRYN (Yoga & Naturopathy): 63 studies undertaken

These numbers reflect the growing scientific validation of Ayush systems and the push towards global acceptance.

AIIMS Joins Hands for Integrative Health Research

In collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Ministry has set up Ayush-ICMR Advanced Centres for Integrative Health Research (AI-ACIHR) at AIIMS campuses across India.

These centres are working on critical health domains:

AIIMS Delhi will focus on Gastrointestinal diseases and Women & Child Health.

AIIMS Jodhpur has been designated to specialize in Geriatric Health.

AIIMS Nagpur will serve as a center of excellence in Cancer Care.

AIIMS Rishikesh will also focus on improving healthcare for the elderly populati

on.

The goal is to integrate Ayush with evidence-based modern medical practices, opening doors for more personalized and holistic patient care.

Unani and Siddha Making Integration Strides

CCRUM has signed MoUs with top institutions like AIIMS, Jamia Millia Islamia, Jamia Hamdard, NIPER, and IICT to advance scientific collaboration in Unani medicine.

Meanwhile, CCRS is running an Integrated Siddha OPD for palliative cancer care at the All India Institute of Ayurveda in Delhi and at Safdarjung Hospital.

Homoeopathy Services Inside Allopathic Hospitals

The CCRH is breaking boundaries by offering homoeopathy treatment within allopathic hospitals across India. This bold step bridges traditional and modern medicine for holistic patient benefits.

Facilities providing integrated homoeopathy services include:

  • Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi
  • Lady Hardinge Medical College, New Delhi
  • Delhi Cantonment General Hospital
  • BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur
  • Civil Hospital, Aizawl, Mizoram
  • District Hospital, Dimapur, Nagaland

This integration strengthens trust in complementary medicine and promotes cross-system cooperation.

Empowering India’s Future in Healthcare

The Ministry of Ayush’s multi-layered strategy reflects a bold vision—to make Ayush globally recognized and scientifically validated. By investing in research, integration, and outreach, the government is ensuring traditional wisdom meets modern science.

This commitment will help address non-communicable diseases, mental health, geriatric care, and lifestyle disorders with time-tested holistic solutions.

Conclusion: Ayush Moves Forward with Purpose

With initiatives like AYURGYAN, advanced research centres at AIIMS, and robust collaborations, the Ayush Ministry is redefining healthcare. Its focus on scientific evidence, collaboration, and integration marks a new era for India’s traditional systems.

The journey ahead is promising—and rooted in both heritage and innovation. Millions of people stand to benefit as Ayush continues its march toward credibility, accessibility, and global leadership.
