Dhaka: On Monday, December 23, 2024, Bangladesh’s interim government confirmed that it had sent a diplomatic note to India, requesting the return of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to the country.
According to Home Advisor Jahangir Alam, his office forwarded a letter to the Foreign Ministry earlier in the day to expedite the process of Ms. Hasina’s extradition.
The 77-year-old former prime minister has been living in exile in India since August 5, following mass student-led protests that ended her 16-year tenure. Arrest warrants have since been issued against her by the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on charges of “crimes against humanity and genocide.”
This development adds another layer of complexity to the political landscape of Bangladesh, as the interim government seeks to address both domestic and international concerns amid ongoing instability.
