Bhagwat’s 75 Age Remark Sparks Modi Retirement Row

Congress Calls for PM Modi’s Retirement

Congress leaders launched a fresh political attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi after Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat made a statement suggesting that political leaders should step aside after the age of 75.Jairam Ramesh, Congress General Secretary, called the timing of the statement “poetic”, reminding Modi that he turns 75 on September 17, 2025.”What a homecoming,” Ramesh posted on X. “Reminded by the RSS Chief that he’ll soon hit 75. And Mohan Bhagwat himself turns 75 on September 11!”

Bhagwat’s Remark Triggers Political Firestorm

Speaking at a book launch in Nagpur, Bhagwat said, “When you turn 75, you should step aside and make way for others.”

He was quoting late RSS ideologue Moropant Pingle, who believed receiving a shawl at that age was a sign to gracefully retire.

This seemingly simple reflection has now snowballed into a national debate.

Old Retirement Rule Comes Back to Haunt

Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut was quick to point out that Modi himself used the same retirement norm to sideline BJP veterans like L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi.

“Let’s see if he applies it to himself now,” Raut challenged.

Pawan Khera of Congress echoed the sentiment, saying, “Now both Modi and Bhagwat should pick up their bags and guide each other out.”

BJP Dismisses Speculations

In May 2023, Union Home Minister Amit Shah firmly dismissed speculation about Modi’s retirement, saying, “Modi ji will continue to lead till 2029.”

Party sources maintain there’s no retirement clause in the BJP’s constitution and that age has never formally been a disqualification.

However, the perception of a 75-year rule remains due to earlier actions taken against senior leaders.

RSS-BJP Power Dynamics in Focus

Raut earlier claimed that Modi’s March visit to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur — his first in over a decade — was not just symbolic. According to him, it involved “serious discussions about succession and retirement.”

The BJP has refuted those claims, calling the visit routine and unrelated to leadership changes.

Why It Matters Now

The timing of this controversy is critical. As India gears up for the 2029 elections, debates about generational change are heating up across parties.

With both Modi and Bhagwat turning 75 this September, their future roles are under scrutiny.

This has reignited broader questions: Should there be a fixed retirement age for political leaders? Or does experience always trump age?

Public Reaction and Political Implications

The public is divided. While some agree that leadership must evolve, others argue that wisdom comes with age.

A Times of India poll showed 54% respondents favored a fixed age cap to enable fresh leadership.

This issue could redefine how Indian parties shape succession planning and generational transitions.
