Bharat Bandh 2025: Will Banks, Schools Be Open Tomorrow?

RR Team, July 8, 2025July 8, 2025

Over 25 Crore Workers to Join Bharat Bandh on July 9

India is bracing for a massive Bharat Bandh on Wednesday, July 9, 2025. More than 25 crore workers from across sectors have pledged support to the strike. This includes banking, insurance, construction, transport, and public services.

Organised by a joint forum of 10 central trade unions, the strike is a protest against what the unions describe as “anti-worker, anti-farmer and pro-corporate policies” of the central government.

Why Are Workers Protesting?

The unions have accused the government of neglecting labor rights. According to a joint statement:

  • The government hasn’t held an annual labour conference in 10 years.
  • New labour codes weaken collective bargaining rights.
  • Public sector enterprises are being privatised.
  • Jobs are increasingly being outsourced and casualised.

Amarjeet Kaur from the All India Trade Union Congress told PTI that preparations are in full swing across both the formal and informal sectors. Rural workers and farmers will also participate.

Which Services Will Be Affected?

Though there is no official holiday declared, major disruptions are expected in these sectors:

  • Banks: Employees from public sector banks, under the All India Bank Employees Association, will join the strike.
  • Insurance: Staff from LIC and other insurers are expected to protest.
  • Postal Services: Deliveries and counter services may be disrupted.
  • Transport: Some state-run buses and services may be halted.
  • Power Supply: Over 27 lakh electricity department employees are expected to strike.

Factories and coal mining operations may also face partial shutdowns depending on the location and union participation.

Will Schools and Colleges Be Closed?

As of now, no state government has announced closure of schools or colleges due to the bandh. Educational institutions are expected to remain open. However, student attendance may vary based on transport availability and local support for the strike.

Will Banks Be Open on July 9?

Banks will not have an official holiday, but expect long wait times or shuttered branches in several regions. The Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association has confirmed its participation in the strike.

If you have urgent banking work, it is best to complete it today or use online services tomorrow.

Public Reaction and Support

Several civil society groups, farmer unions, and student bodies have extended their solidarity. On social media, hashtags like #BharatBandh2025 and #WorkersUnite are trending as citizens express both support and concern.

What the Government Says

While the Ministry of Labour has yet to respond to the latest statement, last year’s charter of demands — containing 17 points — was submitted to Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. These demands have largely remained unaddressed, according to union leaders.

The government maintains that labour reforms are aimed at creating a better environment for business and employment. However, unions argue that workers are being left behind in the name of “ease of doing business.”

How to Stay Safe and Informed

Here’s how you can stay updated and safe during the Bharat Bandh:

  • Check local news for area-specific updates.
  • Use online banking and mobile apps.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel if public transport is likely to be disrupted.
  • Keep in touch with your school or college administration for any last-minute notices.

Final Thoughts

Bharat Bandh 2025 is shaping up to be one of the largest worker strikes in recent years. With over 25 crore people expected to participate, the message from India’s labour force is loud and clear. Whether it leads to policy dialogue or continues to fuel discontent remains to be seen.

For now, prepare for disruptions and stay updated on service status in your city.
