Jamal Simmons, former communications director for Kamala Harris, recently suggested that President Joe Biden should consider stepping down, allowing Harris to become the first female President of the United States before Donald Trump assumes office on January 20, 2025. Simmons argued that this unexpected decision would disrupt Trump’s anticipated return to the presidency, despite his recent electoral victory. He noted that Biden’s resignation could redefine his legacy as a “transitional figure,” fulfilling one final commitment to the public.
Simmons, who worked with Harris from 2022 to 2023, explained that Biden stepping down would also spare Harris the responsibility of overseeing the January 6 transition as Vice President, especially since she was a candidate in the election. Although Trump has won, the period before Inauguration Day allows time for the formal transition of power.
On January 6, Harris would be required to certify Trump’s victory, creating a unique situation in which a Vice President—and former candidate—would affirm a rival’s win. Simmons believes Biden’s resignation could offer Democrats a chance to refresh their image, embracing transparency and fostering a stronger connection with the public.
