Bihar Launches Pink Bus Service to Ensure Safe and Affordable Travel for Women

RR Team, May 16, 2025May 16, 2025

In a significant step toward ensuring safer and more comfortable public transport for women, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is set to launch the much-awaited Pink Bus Service in six cities across the state. The ceremony will take place at 1 Anne Marg in Patna, where the first fleet of 20 specially designed pink buses will be flagged off under the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation Limited (BSRTC).

These buses, painted in a distinct pink to symbolize safety and empowerment, are being introduced as part of a broader initiative to make public transportation more inclusive and secure for women, especially working professionals and students. Eight of these CNG-powered buses will operate in Patna, with the remaining distributed among Muzaffarpur, Gaya, Darbhanga, Bhagalpur, and Purnia.

In Patna, the pink buses will initially run on four key routes, including the bustling Gandhi Maidan to AIIMS-Phulwarisharif stretch, Danapur, Kurji via Boring Road, and from NIT More to Kankarbagh auto stand. Fares have been kept affordable, ranging from ₹6 to ₹35 for a one-way journey, and passengers will have access to various payment options, including prepaid cards, monthly passes, and student concessions.

Each 22-seater bus is equipped with state-of-the-art safety features like CCTV cameras, GPS tracking, panic buttons, fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits. Additionally, each seat includes a mobile charging port. The location of these buses can be tracked in real time via the ‘Chalo’ mobile application, offering added convenience and security.

While male drivers will operate the buses initially, women conductors will be part of the crew from day one, with plans to train women drivers soon. This balanced staffing aims to ensure a safe and encouraging environment for both passengers and female staff.

Transport Minister Sheela Kumari expressed pride in the initiative, stating that this move is a powerful symbol of social progress and empowerment for women in Bihar. She also confirmed that plans are already in motion to add 80 more pink buses, further expanding the service across the state.

Transport Secretary Sandeep Kumar R Pudakalkatti emphasized that the initiative is particularly targeted at supporting the daily commute of women and girl students by giving them a secure space on public transport. The pink buses, clearly visible from a distance, are designed not only for functionality but also as a statement of commitment to gender-sensitive governance.

As the state moves toward more inclusive development, the Pink Bus Service stands as a compassionate and practical measure, reflecting Bihar’s growing focus on gender equity and public safety.
