The Delhi Police has identified a juvenile responsible for sending hoax bomb threats to over 400 schools across the city last year. In a statement, Special CP for Law and Order Madhup Tiwari revealed that the juvenile’s parent is associated with an NGO allegedly linked to a political party. The NGO had previously questioned the legitimacy of terrorist Afzal Guru’s execution, sparking political debate.
Tiwari detailed the technical challenges faced in tracing the hoax emails due to the use of VPNs and other tools to mask identity. A breakthrough occurred on January 8, 2025, enabling investigators to trace the source of the emails. Further forensic analysis of the juvenile’s device confirmed at least seven instances of hoax threats.
The BJP has seized on these findings to accuse the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of having ties with the NGO in question. BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi called on AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal to clarify the party’s alleged links to the NGO, stating that such associations could indicate a conspiracy to disrupt law and order in Delhi.
In response, AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh dismissed the accusations, claiming the BJP is politicizing security concerns for electoral gains. Singh argued that the police’s delayed revelations, despite months of investigation, suggest political motives behind the claims.
The incidents have reignited concerns about rising hoax threats, with official reports indicating nearly 1,000 such incidents targeting schools, colleges, and airlines in 2024 alone. The investigation into the juvenile’s actions and any possible conspiracy involving NGOs or political entities remains ongoing.
This development has further intensified political tensions in the lead-up to the Delhi elections, with both parties trading accusations over the issue.
