Bombay Gymkhana’s 150th Anniversary Stamp Released

Paying tribute to one of India’s most iconic sporting institutions, Union Minister of Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, on Saturday unveiled a commemorative postage stamp marking the 150th anniversary of the Bombay Gymkhana. The special stamp was released at the historic Bombay Gymkhana premises in Mumbai, celebrating its enduring contribution to Indian sports and cultural life.
The release ceremony was attended by Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Shri Milind Deora, President of Bombay Gymkhana Mr. Sanjiv Saran Mehra, Postmaster General of Navi Mumbai Region Ms. Suchita Joshi, along with senior officials of the Department of Posts, members of the Gymkhana, and other distinguished guests.

Stamp as a Messenger of Values

Addressing the gathering, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia described the commemorative stamp as a “travelling messenger” that would carry the story and values of the Bombay Gymkhana from one person to another. He noted that, much like sport, postage stamps tell stories of discipline, excellence, and shared heritage, inspiring young generations to remain active and believe in the power of institutions.

The Union Minister said that stamps, though small in size, play a significant role in preserving national memories and celebrating milestones that have shaped India’s social and cultural fabric.

Parallel Between India Post and Bombay Gymkhana

Drawing a parallel between India Post and the Bombay Gymkhana, Shri Scindia observed that both institutions are rooted in connecting people and bridging generations. While the Gymkhana has brought together sportspersons and communities for over a century, India Post has served as a trusted medium for communication, financial inclusion, and citizen services across the country.

He highlighted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Department of Posts is undergoing a major transformation, modernising its systems and expanding its role to emerge as one of the world’s largest and most inclusive logistics organisations in the coming years.

A Legacy Since 1875

Established in 1875, the Bombay Gymkhana has stood as a pillar of India’s sporting and social heritage. Over the past 150 years, it has nurtured generations of athletes and served as a vibrant hub for cricket, athletics, and other sporting and cultural activities.

The institution is widely regarded for promoting sportsmanship, camaraderie, and community engagement, making it an integral part of Mumbai’s and India’s sporting landscape.

Design and Availability of the Stamp

The commemorative postage stamp features a detailed depiction of the iconic Bombay Gymkhana campus and grounds, symbolising its rich heritage and long-standing contribution to Indian sport. Through this special issue, the Department of Posts has honoured the institution’s 150-year journey and reaffirmed its commitment to preserving India’s sporting milestones through philately.

The stamp will be available to the public through Philatelic Bureaux across the country and can also be purchased online via the official e-post office platform.
