BSNL Soft Launches India’s First SIM-less 5G FWA

BSNL Introduces India’s First SIM-less Quantum 5G FWA in Hyderabad

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has taken a bold leap in India’s 5G journey with the soft launch of Quantum 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) in Hyderabad. This new solution offers blazing-fast fibre-like internet speeds wirelessly—without even requiring a SIM card. The service, launched on June 18, 2025, at the BSNL Ameerpet Exchange, marks a significant milestone in the country’s move towards fully indigenous digital infrastructure.

“Quantum 5G FWA demonstrates how Indian engineers can create world-class connectivity,” said Shri A. Robert J. Ravi, Chairman & Managing Director, BSNL/MTNL.

What Makes BSNL’s Quantum 5G FWA Revolutionary?

✅ SIM-less, Direct-to-Device Access

BSNL’s Quantum 5G FWA is India’s first production-grade SIM-less 5G solution. It uses Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology, where the customer premises equipment (CPE) automatically authenticates to the network—no SIM insertion needed.

✅ 100% Indigenous Technology Stack

From core network to radio access and CPE, the entire system is developed by Indian vendors, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative. This makes BSNL the first operator in India to deploy a fully home-grown 5G solution.

✅ Gigabit-Class Performance

At the Hyderabad soft launch site, real-world speed tests clocked:

These speeds make the service ideal for:

✅ Easy Installation, Zero Trenching

The service uses BSNL’s existing 5G tower infrastructure in Hyderabad. Its self-installable gateway covers nearly 85% of households, removing the need for fibre trenching or complex installation.

Expansion Plans: Cities, Tariffs, and Enterprise Services

📍 Pilot Rollout in 6 More Cities

By September 2025, pilot testing will expand to:

💸 Affordable Tariff Plans (Introductory)

These competitive prices target both urban and semi-urban users.

🏭 Enterprise Edge-Cloud Readiness

The same 5G Standalone (SA) core will support:

Controlled Launch: Feedback Before Nationwide Rollout

The Quantum 5G FWA is currently in a “soft launch” phase, aimed at collecting user feedback and optimizing the customer experience before a full-scale national rollout.

The launch event was attended by BSNL’s Board of Directors, senior officials from DoT, academia, and industry partners.

BSNL reaffirmed its commitment to bringing cutting-edge connectivity to all corners of India—especially rural and underserved areas.

Why This Matters for India

This initiative positions BSNL as a 5G technology pioneer and a serious contender against private players. With no reliance on foreign vendors, this launch also showcases India’s R&D and manufacturing strength.
