Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), India’s premier state-owned telecommunications service provider, has ushered in the New Year with a major digital connectivity boost by launching Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) services across all telecom circles in the country. The nationwide rollout, announced on January 1, 2026, marks a significant milestone in BSNL’s ongoing network modernisation programme and its commitment to bridging connectivity gaps, especially in underserved and remote regions.
What is VoWiFi and How It Works
Voice over WiFi, commonly known as Wi-Fi Calling, allows voice calls and messaging services to be delivered over a Wi-Fi network instead of relying solely on traditional cellular towers. BSNL’s VoWiFi is an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS)-based service that ensures high-quality voice calls with minimal latency.
One of the key advantages of BSNL’s VoWiFi service is seamless handover between Wi-Fi and mobile networks. This means that an ongoing call can automatically switch from Wi-Fi to cellular connectivity, or vice versa, without interruption as the user moves between coverage areas.
Boost for Rural and Remote Connectivity
The VoWiFi rollout is expected to be particularly beneficial for customers living in rural, hilly, and remote regions where mobile coverage is often inconsistent. As long as a stable Wi-Fi connection is available, including BSNL Bharat Fiber or other broadband services, users can enjoy reliable voice communication.
This initiative aligns with the government’s broader Digital India vision, aiming to ensure inclusive digital access and reduce the urban-rural connectivity divide. By leveraging existing broadband infrastructure, BSNL is enhancing service quality without the need for additional mobile towers in challenging terrains.
No Extra Charges, No New Apps
BSNL has clarified that VoWiFi calls are completely free of cost and do not attract any additional tariffs. Customers can make calls using their regular phone dialer, without downloading or installing any third-party applications.
Calls made over Wi-Fi use the same mobile number, ensuring a familiar and hassle-free experience for users. Additionally, VoWiFi helps reduce congestion on cellular networks, improving overall service quality for all subscribers.
Device Compatibility and Customer Support
The VoWiFi service is supported on most modern smartphones. Customers only need to enable the “Wi-Fi Calling” option in their handset settings to start using the feature. Availability may vary depending on device model and software version.
For assistance related to handset compatibility or service activation, BSNL customers can visit their nearest BSNL customer service centre or contact the BSNL helpline at 1800-1503.
Part of BSNL’s Network Modernisation Drive
The nationwide launch of VoWiFi is a key component of BSNL’s broader efforts to modernise its telecom infrastructure and improve service delivery. Alongside the expansion of Bharat Fiber and upgrades to mobile networks, VoWiFi strengthens BSNL’s position as a reliable and inclusive telecom service provider.
As demand for seamless connectivity continues to grow, especially in indoor environments such as homes, offices, and basements, VoWiFi is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing customer experience across India.
