C-DOT & IIT Roorkee Launch Centre of Excellence in Telecom

The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a premier R&D organisation under the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) to establish a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in advanced communication technologies.
The CoE aims to accelerate indigenous research, innovation, and capacity building in domains such as 5G, 6G, AI-based applications, quantum communication, and cyber security. By fostering academia–industry collaboration, the CoE will enable students, researchers, and start-ups to contribute to India’s technological self-reliance and strengthen its leadership in global telecom innovation.

The CoE will focus on joint research and prototype development in emerging areas including RF-Sub-THz integrated circuits, millimeter wave beamforming antennas, V2X communication, energy-efficient wireless technologies, and data-driven telecom solutions. Leveraging C-DOT’s expertise and IIT Roorkee’s academic strength, the CoE will provide a platform for high-impact R&D, intellectual property development, and continuous knowledge exchange.

Prof. K.K. Pant, Director of IIT Roorkee, highlighted that “this collaboration marks an important milestone, providing a transformative platform for faculty, researchers, and students to co-develop technologies of strategic national importance and contribute to India’s vision of technological leadership.”

Dr. Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, emphasised that the partnership will accelerate indigenous telecom innovation, reducing dependence on foreign systems and enabling India to lead in advanced technologies like 5G, 6G, AI, and secure communication systems.

The MoU signing event was attended by faculty members of IIT Roorkee and senior officials from C-DOT. It also coincided with the sixth Prof. A.K. Kamal Memorial Lecture Series, where Dr. Upadhyay delivered a lecture on “Building Indigenous Communication Technologies for Viksit Bharat”, highlighting India’s telecom landscape and C-DOT’s indigenous solutions.

The establishment of this CoE reflects India’s commitment to self-reliance and innovation in telecom, supporting start-ups, promoting high-impact R&D, and enhancing academic–industry collaborations for a resilient and technologically advanced India.
