Three Key Railway Projects Approved
The approved projects include the Gondia–Jabalpur doubling, Punarakh–Kiul third and fourth lines, and Gamharia–Chandil third and fourth lines. Together, they cover eight districts across the four states and are aimed at strengthening some of the busiest rail corridors.
The multitracking initiative will enhance line capacity, improve punctuality and streamline both passenger and freight operations. Railway officials estimate that around 5,407 villages with a combined population of nearly 98 lakh people will benefit from improved connectivity.
Boost to Freight and Industrial Growth
The capacity expansion is expected to facilitate an additional freight movement of nearly 52 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). These routes are critical for transporting coal, steel, cement, iron ore, fertilizers, limestone, foodgrains and petroleum products.
Improved rail infrastructure will reduce logistics costs and ensure faster movement of bulk commodities. By shifting freight to rail, the country could reduce oil imports by an estimated six crore litres and cut carbon emissions by nearly 30 crore kilograms — equivalent to planting one crore trees.
Railways, being an energy-efficient and environment-friendly mode of transport, remain central to India’s climate commitments and sustainable development goals.
PM Gati Shakti Integration
The projects have been planned under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which promotes integrated and multimodal infrastructure development. The goal is to align rail expansion with roadways, ports and industrial corridors for seamless goods movement.
Officials say the multitracking projects will help decongest existing lines and improve operational efficiency. Enhanced line capacity is expected to benefit both long-distance express services and freight trains, reducing delays and improving reliability.
Tourism and Regional Connectivity Gains
Beyond freight, the projects are likely to enhance access to several prominent tourist destinations. These include Kachnar Shiv Temple in Jabalpur, Kanha and Pench National Parks, Dhuandhar Waterfall, Bargi Dam, Chandil Dam, Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary and other attractions.
Improved connectivity can stimulate local tourism economies and create employment opportunities in hospitality, transport and allied services. The Cabinet stated that the projects align with the broader vision of regional development and self-reliance.
Long-Term Impact on Indian Railways
The 307 km addition to the railway network marks a significant capacity enhancement in high-density corridors. Multitracking projects are crucial in handling rising passenger demand and growing freight volumes in mineral-rich and industrial belts.
As India accelerates infrastructure investment, railway modernization continues to play a central role in economic growth. The Cabinet’s latest decision reinforces the government’s focus on strengthening rail infrastructure as a backbone of national logistics.
