Cabinet Approves Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat Rail Doubling

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the doubling of the Bhagalpur–Dumka–Rampurhat railway line section spanning 177 km across Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The project is estimated at Rs. 3,169 crore and aims to enhance rail capacity, reduce congestion, and improve service reliability for Indian Railways.

Boosting Regional Development and Employment

The multi-tracking project is aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, focusing on integrated multimodal connectivity and logistical efficiency. The enhanced railway section will benefit five districts across the three states, connecting approximately 441 villages and a population of around 28.72 lakh, including aspirational districts Banka, Godda, and Dumka.

Key pilgrimage and tourist destinations such as Deoghar (Baba Baidyanath Dham) and Tarapith (Shakti Peeth) will also gain improved accessibility, promoting tourism and local economic growth. The project is expected to create additional employment and self-employment opportunities in the region.

Freight Efficiency and Environmental Benefits

The railway section serves as a crucial corridor for transporting commodities including coal, cement, fertilizers, bricks, and stones. Capacity augmentation is projected to handle an additional 15 million tonnes of freight annually, reducing logistics costs and easing congestion on busy lines.

Indian Railways’ energy-efficient operations will contribute to environmental sustainability, potentially reducing oil imports by 5 crore litres and cutting CO2 emissions by 24 crore kilograms—equivalent to planting one crore trees. This aligns with national climate goals while enhancing freight efficiency.

Strategic Vision for a New India

The project embodies Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a “New India” by supporting infrastructure-driven development, promoting self-reliance, and increasing economic opportunities for local populations. Seamless connectivity for the movement of people, goods, and services will strengthen trade, tourism, and industrial growth across the three states.

With the doubling of this critical railway section, the government aims to modernize transport infrastructure, improve passenger and freight operations, and ensure the region’s long-term socio-economic advancement.
