Carbon Capture to Drive India’s Steel Revolution

RR Team, February 11, 2026February 11, 2026
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday highlighted the transformative potential of carbon capture technology in India’s steel sector, sharing an article by Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy that outlines a roadmap for sustainable industrial growth aligned with the country’s Net Zero 2070 commitment.
Taking to social media platform X, the Prime Minister underscored how guided policy efforts, strategic investments, hydrogen initiatives and innovation-driven reforms can accelerate India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation, or ‘Viksit Bharat’.

Carbon Capture and the Steel Sector

The steel industry remains one of the core pillars of India’s industrial economy. However, it is also energy-intensive and carbon-heavy. The article shared by the Prime Minister explains how carbon capture technologies can significantly reduce emissions while maintaining growth momentum.

Carbon capture involves trapping carbon dioxide emissions generated from industrial processes and preventing them from entering the atmosphere. This approach is seen as crucial in hard-to-abate sectors like steel, where complete electrification remains challenging.

Net Zero 2070 Commitment

India has committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070, a target announced at the COP26 climate summit. The Prime Minister emphasized that efforts in the steel sector form an important component of this long-term strategy.

According to the insights shared, aligning industrial expansion with environmental responsibility will help India enhance its global competitiveness while meeting climate goals. Investments in cleaner technologies are expected to strengthen India’s standing in the global steel market.

Hydrogen Initiatives and Strategic Investments

The article also discusses the role of green hydrogen in reducing emissions in steel production. Hydrogen-based steelmaking, when combined with carbon capture systems, can dramatically lower the carbon footprint of the industry.

Strategic investments in research, infrastructure, and innovation are central to this transformation. The government has been promoting clean energy transitions through various policy frameworks and incentive schemes aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and sustainable growth.

Driving Growth and Global Competitiveness

Prime Minister Modi noted that such initiatives will not only support environmental objectives but also generate economic opportunities. Cleaner steel production can position India as a reliable supplier in global markets increasingly focused on sustainability standards.

The steel sector’s modernization through carbon capture and hydrogen technologies is expected to create new jobs, attract investment, and foster technological leadership.

Road to Viksit Bharat

By integrating sustainability with industrial ambition, India aims to chart a balanced path toward development. The Prime Minister encouraged citizens and industry stakeholders to read the detailed article for deeper insights into how these reforms can shape the future of Indian manufacturing.

As India advances toward its Net Zero 2070 target, carbon capture and green hydrogen are emerging as central pillars in reshaping the steel industry and reinforcing the nation’s aspiration of becoming a Viksit Bharat.
