Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Shri Gyanesh Kumar was conferred with the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award (DAA) by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur during its 66th Foundation Day celebration held at the institute’s campus.

The Distinguished Alumni Award, instituted in 1989, is IIT Kanpur’s highest recognition for its alumni who have made exceptional contributions in their respective fields. Shri Gyanesh Kumar, a 1985 B.Tech graduate in Civil Engineering from IIT Kanpur, received the honour in recognition of his exemplary service to the nation and his leadership in public administration.

A Celebration of Excellence and Leadership

The Distinguished Alumni Award is presented annually to select individuals who have excelled in academic, entrepreneurial, professional, or public service domains. The award celebrates the values of excellence, innovation, and nation-building that IIT Kanpur has upheld for over six decades.

Past recipients of the award include renowned scientists, industry leaders, academicians, and public administrators whose contributions have had a transformative impact on India and beyond. Shri Gyanesh Kumar now joins this elite group of alumni whose work exemplifies IIT Kanpur’s commitment to creating change-makers for society.

Honouring a Legacy of Public Service

Shri Gyanesh Kumar has had a distinguished career in the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). Over the decades, he has played pivotal roles in shaping policy frameworks and ensuring transparent governance across sectors. His leadership as the Chief Election Commissioner has reinforced faith in the electoral process and strengthened democratic institutions.

During the ceremony, faculty members and alumni lauded his vision, integrity, and dedication to public welfare. The honour reflects the institute’s recognition of his lifelong contribution to India’s development and democratic governance.

IIT Kanpur: Nurturing Leaders for the Nation

Established in 1959, IIT Kanpur has been a cradle of innovation and leadership. Its alumni network continues to contribute significantly to India’s technological progress, policy design, and global reputation. The institute has consistently honoured individuals whose journeys exemplify excellence in service and innovation.

Speaking at the event, IIT Kanpur officials emphasized that the Distinguished Alumni Award is not merely a recognition of past achievements but a celebration of enduring values—commitment, integrity, and service to the nation. The 2025 awards ceremony also celebrated several other notable alumni whose work continues to advance India’s scientific and technological ambitions.

A Testament to Integrity and Vision
