Centre Sanctions 10,000 km Roads Under PMGSY-IV

RR Team, January 22, 2026January 23, 2026
The Government of India has approved over 10,000 kilometres of road projects under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana–IV (PMGSY-IV), benefiting Jammu & Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Sikkim. This initiative is set to connect approximately 3,270 previously isolated habitations, unlocking access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities for rural communities.
Spanning remote hills to interior villages, the newly sanctioned roads aim to bridge gaps in accessibility and infrastructure. By providing all-weather connectivity, these projects reinforce the Government’s commitment to inclusive rural development and the vision of Viksit Bharat.

Impact on Rural Communities

The new roads will facilitate access to critical services, including education, healthcare, and local markets, significantly improving the quality of life in remote areas. For residents of previously isolated habitations, this development is expected to enhance livelihood opportunities and strengthen socio-economic integration.

PMGSY-IV Overview

Under PMGSY-IV, connectivity is targeted for 25,000 unconnected habitations with populations of 500+ in plains, 250+ in North-East and hill states, 100+ in LWE-affected districts, and special category areas such as tribal regions, aspirational districts, and desert zones. The scheme aims to provide 62,500 km of all-weather roads, including necessary bridges along these alignments.

Government Investment and Approval

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved the PMGSY-IV proposal on 11 September 2024, with a total outlay of ₹70,125 crore—comprising ₹49,087.50 crore from the central government and ₹21,037.50 crore from states. This financial commitment underscores the Government’s focus on rural infrastructure development and strategic road connectivity.

By connecting remote habitations and facilitating reliable transportation, PMGSY-IV ensures equitable growth and fosters opportunities for rural communities, aligning with India’s larger goal of sustainable and inclusive development.
