China’s Rare Earth Export Cuts Escalate US Trade Tensions

RR Team, October 13, 2025October 13, 2025
New Delhi, October 13 : China’s latest move to tighten export controls on rare earth materials has reignited trade tensions with the United States, prompting President Donald Trump to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese imports. The escalation underscores a renewed struggle for dominance over critical minerals that power the modern defence and technology sectors.

China Tightens Grip on Strategic Minerals

In a late-night announcement from Beijing, China’s Ministry of Commerce unveiled new export restrictions on 12 rare earth elements, including holmium, erbium, thulium, europium, and ytterbium. These materials are critical to producing semiconductors, electric vehicles, aircraft engines, and precision-guided weaponry. Officials claimed the move was driven by “national security considerations,” not by trade retaliation.

“These are legitimate and necessary measures to safeguard national interests,” the ministry stated, emphasizing that civilian-use export applications would still be processed. However, industry experts view the step as a calculated geopolitical maneuver designed to remind Washington of Beijing’s control over the global supply chain.

Trump’s Tariff Retaliation Sends Markets Tumbling

Reacting swiftly, US President Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on all Chinese imports starting November 1. In a lengthy post on his social media platform, Trump accused Beijing of “undermining trust” after months of tentative trade calm. “Our relationship with China was improving, which makes this move even more surprising,” he wrote.

The announcement triggered an immediate market reaction. Wall Street indices suffered their steepest fall in six months, with tech giants like Nvidia and Apple witnessing major declines. Analysts said investors were jolted by fears of a renewed trade war that could slow down global semiconductor and EV production.

Beijing Accuses US of Hypocrisy

China’s Commerce Ministry responded over the weekend, accusing Washington of “unfairly weaponising trade policy.” It cited the US decision to blacklist Chinese firms and impose port fees on China-linked vessels as actions that “harmed China’s interests.” Despite its criticism, Beijing stopped short of announcing retaliatory tariffs — a signal, experts suggest, that China still seeks to maintain diplomatic space for negotiation.

“By showing restraint, China is sending a message that it prefers negotiation over escalation,” said Alfredo Montufar-Helu, managing director at GreenPoint Consulting,

Rare Earths: The New Battlefield of Global Power

Rare earth materials are indispensable for modern defence and technology — powering fighter jets, missile systems, smartphones, and renewable energy infrastructure. China currently processes over 90% of the world’s supply, giving it unmatched leverage over the United States and its allies. As Washington tightens restrictions on semiconductor exports to China, Beijing appears to be countering with its control over critical minerals.

“The U.S. may dominate advanced chips, but China controls the minerals that make those chips possible,” noted Al Jazeera in a recent analysis. This imbalance, experts argue, forms the backbone of the new-age trade conflict — one that extends beyond tariffs to technological supremacy.

Analysts Warn of Supply Chain Disruptions

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) cautioned that the restrictions could severely impact US defence supply chains. Even a temporary shortage of key minerals could delay the production of radar systems, stealth aircraft, and advanced batteries.

Meanwhile, Beijing’s market regulator has intensified scrutiny of major U.S. firms like Qualcomm and Nvidia, launching antitrust investigations into their operations and acquisitions — a move seen as a counterbalance to Washington’s export bans.

A Long Game of Economic Chess

Experts believe both nations are now locked in a long-term strategic contest. “This is not just a trade dispute — it’s about who controls the technologies that define the 21st century,” said Jon Hillman of the Council on Foreign Relations. “Beijing’s latest move is as much about leverage as it is about signalling.”

For Trump, the escalation marks another test of his ability to manage economic confrontation with China, while for Xi Jinping, it’s a demonstration of China’s power to influence global markets through supply dominance rather than direct confrontation.

Conclusion

As the world’s two largest economies edge toward another round of trade conflict, one fact remains clear — in the race for technological supremacy, control over rare earths may prove more decisive than any tariff or sanction. The coming weeks will determine whether restraint or retaliation defines the next phase of this high-stakes standoff.
