Coal India, IIT Madras Launch Sustainable Energy Centre

Coal India Limited (CIL) has partnered with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to establish the Centre for Sustainable Energy, aimed at advancing research, development, and capacity-building in green energy technologies. The MoU was signed by Shri Achyut Ghatak, Director (Technical), CIL, and Shri V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, in the presence of Shri P.M. Prasad, Chairman, CIL, along with senior officials from both organizations.

Focus on Sustainable Energy and Low-Carbon Technologies

The Centre will serve as a hub for cutting-edge R&D in sustainable energy, focusing on repurposing coal mines, developing low-carbon solutions, and reimagining coal as a resource for India’s clean energy transition. Supported by Coal India’s funding, the initiative aligns with the company’s strategic diversification goals and India’s net-zero ambitions by 2070.

Industry-Academia Collaboration for Innovation

Shri P.M. Prasad highlighted that this partnership represents a pivotal step in Coal India’s transformation from a traditional energy provider to a key enabler of India’s sustainable energy transition. “Through this collaboration with IIT Madras, Coal India aims to develop indigenous solutions ensuring energy security, decarbonization, and socioeconomic growth,” he said.

Shri V. Kamakoti emphasized the importance of industry-academia collaborations in driving India’s low-carbon future. “This partnership epitomizes IIT Madras’ commitment to innovation in sustainable energy. Together, we aim to develop scalable and impactful technologies supporting India’s clean energy roadmap,” he added.

Capacity Building and Human Capital Development

The Centre will also focus on nurturing the next generation of researchers and engineers through Ph.D., postdoctoral, and internship programs, equipping them to lead India’s green energy transformation. This initiative will enhance knowledge transfer, technical expertise, and the development of sustainable solutions across the country.

With this collaboration, Coal India and IIT Madras are setting the stage for significant advancements in clean energy technology, highlighting the role of research-driven innovation in addressing India’s energy and environmental challenges.
