The Centre will serve as a hub for cutting-edge R&D in sustainable energy, focusing on repurposing coal mines, developing low-carbon solutions, and reimagining coal as a resource for India’s clean energy transition. Supported by Coal India’s funding, the initiative aligns with the company’s strategic diversification goals and India’s net-zero ambitions by 2070.
Industry-Academia Collaboration for Innovation
Shri P.M. Prasad highlighted that this partnership represents a pivotal step in Coal India’s transformation from a traditional energy provider to a key enabler of India’s sustainable energy transition. “Through this collaboration with IIT Madras, Coal India aims to develop indigenous solutions ensuring energy security, decarbonization, and socioeconomic growth,” he said.
Shri V. Kamakoti emphasized the importance of industry-academia collaborations in driving India’s low-carbon future. “This partnership epitomizes IIT Madras’ commitment to innovation in sustainable energy. The Centre will also focus on nurturing the next generation of researchers and engineers through Ph.D., postdoctoral, and internship programs, equipping them to lead India’s green energy transformation. This initiative will enhance knowledge transfer, technical expertise, and the development of sustainable solutions across the country.
