Delhi AQI Improves, Stage-I GRAP Revoked in NCR

RR Team, June 16, 2025June 15, 2025

Delhi Gets a Breather as CAQM Revokes GRAP Stage-I

In a positive step for the environment, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has lifted Stage-I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in the National Capital Region (NCR).

On June 15, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) improved to 140, which falls in the ‘Moderate’ category, as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

What Triggered the Decision?

The CAQM Sub-Committee on GRAP held a review meeting after observing:

  • Delhi’s AQI has improved steadily over recent days.

  • Weather forecasts by IMD and IITM predict that the AQI will remain moderate for the next few days.

Due to this trend, the committee decided to lift Stage-I actions of GRAP immediately across the NCR.

What Is Stage-I of GRAP?

Stage-I of GRAP kicks in when AQI crosses 201. It includes early measures like:

  • Banning open waste burning

  • Controlling dust at construction sites

  • Intensifying road cleaning

  • Watching industrial emissions

With Delhi’s air showing consistent improvement, these restrictions are no longer necessary — for now.

Pollution Controls Must Continue

Even though the air is cleaner, authorities have asked all state and city agencies in NCR to:

  • Keep following existing guidelines from CPCB and CAQM

  • Maintain dust control efforts, especially at construction zones

  • Stick to the long-term timelines under CAQM’s pollution control plan

The goal is to keep the air quality from slipping back into the ‘Poor’ or ‘Very Poor’ category.

Long-Term Focus Remains

Agencies must work on long-term actions like:

  • Increasing use of electric vehicles

  • Expanding green cover in urban areas

  • Improving waste and sewage management

  • Monitoring industrial pollution hotspots

These steps are part of CAQM’s comprehensive clean air strategy for the NCR.

Daily Monitoring to Prevent Setbacks

The CAQM Sub-Committee said it will:

“Keep a close watch on the air quality and take timely decisions.”

If air quality worsens again, GRAP stages can return quickly. The system is dynamic and aims to respond fast.

Citizens Also Have a Role

While the situation has improved, Delhi residents must stay alert. Small steps help:

  • Use public transport

  • Avoid burning trash

  • Support clean energy use

  • Cut down on construction dust

Cleaner air needs both government action and citizen responsibility.
