New Delhi, June 29, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi, predicting light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms for the next four days. The national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 26.8°C on Sunday, bringing some relief from the recent heatwave.
Relief and Risks Amid Wet Spell
Saturday’s showers brought down temperatures and offered relief, especially in areas like Palam (10 mm), Pushp Vihar (7 mm), and Gurugram (11 mm). However, the rainfall also caused traffic snarls in Sheikh Sarai and other low-lying zones due to waterlogging and poor visibility.
IMD forecasts suggest continued instability in weather with occasional thunder, lightning, and wind speeds up to 40 kmph in parts of Delhi-NCR, including Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Faridabad, and Noida.
Why Monsoon is Still ‘Missing’
Despite consistent showers, the IMD has refrained from declaring monsoon onset officially. Meteorologists typically wait for consistent rainfall across stations and supportive wind patterns before such a declaration.
Looking forward, a sustained wet phase may push the monsoon declaration early next week, depending on satellite readings and atmospheric conditions.
Health Alert: Crop Burning Adds to Delhi’s Pollution Woes
A recent international study has flagged a pressing concern — crop residue burning in Punjab and Haryana causes nearly one-third of all PM2.5-related deaths in Delhi during the post-monsoon season.
The transported smoke becomes the primary source of organic aerosols, surpassing vehicular and industrial pollution during peak haze days. Researchers warn that short-term PM2.5 exposure leads to about 6% of all annual deaths in Delhi and Kanpur.
Stay Alert and Prepared
Residents are advised to stay updated via IMD alerts, avoid waterlogged routes, and carry umbrellas and rain gear. With more rain expected, both traffic disruptions and power outages may occur in vulnerable areas.
