Empty Delhi streets during peak summer heatwave

Delhi Heatwave: Feels Like 52°C, IMD Issues Red Alert

RR Team, June 12, 2025June 12, 2025

Delhi Gripped by Extreme Heat as Temperatures Soar Beyond 51.9°C

Delhi is in the grip of a severe heatwave, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for Thursday and a yellow alert for Friday. On Wednesday, the “feels like” temperature in parts of the national capital touched a staggering 51.9°C, making it one of the hottest days this year.

🔴 Red Alert Issued, Heat to Continue

The IMD has warned that heatwave conditions will persist across Northwest India, including Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana until June 13. Relief is likely after Friday, with forecasts of rain and thunderstorms.

“Heatwave conditions were reported in several parts of Delhi. Aya Nagar touched 45°C, meeting the heatwave criteria,” said Krishna Mishra, senior IMD scientist.

🧭 Key Temperatures in Delhi

  • Aya Nagar: 45.0°C

  • Palam: 44.5°C (4.3°C above normal)

  • Lodhi Road: 43.4°C (4.4°C above normal)

  • Safdarjung (base station): 43.3°C

Humidity worsened the discomfort, fluctuating between 73% and 31%. Wind speeds from the north-northeast reached up to 10 kmph, failing to offer much respite.

⚠️ What is a Heatwave?

According to the IMD, a heatwave is declared when:

  • Maximum temperature is ≥ 45°C, or

  • Temperature is > 40°C with a departure of ≥ 4.5°C above normal.

Using this criterion, only Aya Nagar officially experienced a heatwave on Wednesday, while Palam and Lodhi Road narrowly missed it.

🌦️ Respite in Sight: Rain from June 13

IMD forecasts suggest thunderstorms with gusty winds (up to 60 kmph) on Friday. A confluence of moisture-laden winds from both the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal is expected to trigger showers, providing much-needed relief.

“Temperatures are likely to remain high until Thursday, with a gradual decline from Friday due to incoming southwest and southeast winds,” added Mishra.

😷 Air Quality Remains Poor

While Delhi sweltered, air quality remained poor.

  • AQI on Wednesday: 245

  • AQI on Tuesday: 217

Poor air quality continues to plague residents, adding to the health risks during this intense heatwave.

📝 Final Notes

This record-breaking heatwave is another stark reminder of climate change and urban heat island effects. Authorities have urged people to stay indoors, drink plenty of fluids, avoid strenuous activities during peak hours, and watch out for signs of heatstroke.

Stay tuned to official weather updates and follow IMD advisories closely as Delhi hopes for rain relief by the weekend.
