DEPwD Launches RPL Certification for Inclusive Education

The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, is launching a series of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Certification Programs in collaboration with ISLRTC, NIEPVD Dehradun, and ALIMCO. Scheduled as part of Special Campaign 5.0 from 2nd to 31st October 2025, the initiative aims to recognize educators’ contributions and promote inclusive education and assistive technology for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).

Certification Programs for Educators and Interpreters

The RPL programs are designed to formally acknowledge the knowledge and skills of teachers, instructors, and trainers working with visually and hearing-impaired learners. The programs include:

  • RPL in ICT & Assistive Technologies for instructors of Persons with Visual Impairment, covering subjects like Computer, Music, Physical Education, and STEM.
  • RPL Certification in Teaching Computer Literacy Skills to Children with Hearing Impairment using Indian Sign Language (ISL).
  • RPL Certification in ISL Interpretation for Cricket Commentary (CISLI-CC) to train professional ISL cricket commentators for IPL and international tournaments.
  • RPL Certification in Teaching English Literacy Skills for Children with Hearing Impairment.

These short-term programs assess existing competencies, provide additional training, and certify educators, enhancing professional credibility and fostering the integration of assistive technologies in classrooms.

Assistive Devices Distribution Across India

As part of this initiative, ALIMCO will organize 75 distribution camps nationwide, benefitting over 40,000 PwDs with high-quality aids and assistive devices worth more than Rs. 38 crores. This will strengthen accessibility and mobility support for beneficiaries across urban and rural regions.

Training Mechanics for Mobility Aid Maintenance

DEPwD is also launching a specialized program to train local cycle and e-rickshaw mechanics in repairing and maintaining mobility assistive devices like motorized and manual tricycles, and wheelchairs. Successful participants will receive certification as “Trained by ALIMCO”. This initiative ensures:

  • Timely repair and maintenance services for PwDs
  • Creation of a skilled network of mechanics across India
  • New livelihood opportunities for local service providers
  • Enhanced accessibility and independence for PwDs

Impact on Inclusive Education and Empowerment

By certifying educators, interpreters, and mechanics, this initiative empowers professionals and enhances service delivery for PwDs. It promotes vocational readiness, independence, and inclusion while bridging learning gaps in science, music, technology, sports, and language education. Through these efforts, the DEPwD strengthens India’s inclusive education ecosystem, supporting the social and professional growth of persons with disabilities.
