Dev Deepawali 2024: Date, History, Significance, and Everything You Need to Know

RR Team, November 15, 2024November 15, 2024

Dev Deepawali, also known as Dev Diwali, Tripurotsav, or Tripurari Purnima, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated with much enthusiasm and devotion, especially in the holy city of Varanasi. This festival takes place on the full moon day (Purnima) of the Kartik month, falling fifteen days after Diwali, and is often referred to as the “Diwali of the Gods.”

Dev Deepawali 2024: Date and Timings

This year, Dev Deepawali will be observed on Friday, November 15, 2024. The key rituals of the day will be performed during the auspicious Pradoshkal Muhurta between 5:10 PM and 7:47 PM (IST).

  • Purnima Tithi (Full Moon) begins on November 15, 2024, at 6:19 AM and concludes on November 16, 2024, at 2:58 AM (IST).

Devotees will gather at the ghats of Varanasi and other sacred places to celebrate the occasion, lighting thousands of diyas (earthen lamps) and offering prayers.

History and Significance of Dev Deepawali

Dev Deepawali marks a powerful event from Hindu mythology. It is believed to celebrate Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura, a battle that symbolizes the eternal triumph of good over evil. According to the legend, Tripurasura was a powerful demon who created a series of three cities (Tripura), which were a threat to the gods. Lord Shiva, with his divine powers, destroyed these cities, bringing peace to the universe. This victory is commemorated with Dev Deepawali.

The festival is also closely linked to the birth of Lord Kartik, the son of Lord Shiva, further elevating its significance.

On this day, it is believed that Hindu gods descend to the earth to join the celebrations. Devotees gather on the banks of the Ganges River to take a sacred dip, known as Kartik Snan, to purify themselves and wash away sins. Bathing in the holy Ganga on Dev Deepawali is considered especially auspicious, bringing blessings and prosperity.

Dev Deepawali Celebrations

The evening of Dev Deepawali transforms Varanasi, the city of temples, into a stunning display of light. As night falls, millions of diyas (small clay lamps) are lit along the ghats of the Ganges and around the temples. The sight of the riverbank illuminated by the flickering flames is both breathtaking and spiritually uplifting, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness.

The city is filled with prayers, hymns, and devotional songs, and devotees offer their gratitude to the gods for their protection and blessings.

In addition to Varanasi, Dev Deepawali is also celebrated in other parts of India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and parts of Madhya Pradesh, though the scale and grandeur of the celebrations in Varanasi are unmatched.
