Devnimori Relics Return After Sri Lanka Exposition

RR Team, February 11, 2026February 12, 2026

New Delhi: The sacred Devnimori Relics of Lord Buddha have returned to India following a historic week-long public exposition at Colombo’s revered Gangaramaya Temple in Sri Lanka. The spiritual event drew more than one million devotees, marking a major milestone in India–Sri Lanka cultural and civilisational ties.

The holy relics were displayed abroad for the first time, underscoring India’s role as a custodian of global Buddhist heritage. Their return concludes a deeply emotional and symbolic chapter in bilateral spiritual diplomacy between the two nations.

High-Level Delegation Escorts Relics

The relics were escorted back to India by a high-level delegation led by Madhya Pradesh Governor Shri Mangubhai Patel and Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Shri Chowna Mein. Senior Buddhist monks and government officials accompanied the delegation.

The ceremonial departure took place at Bandaranaike International Airport in the presence of Sri Lankan ministers and the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, reflecting the significance attached to the event by both governments.

Over One Million Devotees Pay Homage

During the seven-day exposition at Gangaramaya Temple, devotees from across Sri Lanka thronged the venue to offer prayers and pay homage. Organisers confirmed that over one million people participated in the public veneration.

Several prominent Sri Lankan leaders, including Prime Minister-level representatives, Cabinet ministers, Members of Parliament, and former Presidents, visited the temple to seek blessings. The scale of participation highlighted the enduring spiritual bond shared by the people of India and Sri Lanka.

Historic Inauguration and Cultural Exhibitions

The exposition was inaugurated by Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Sri Lankan leaders expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India for facilitating the historic spiritual event.

From the Indian side, Gujarat Governor Shri Acharya Devvrat and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Shri Harsh Sanghavi attended the inauguration ceremony. Their presence underscored the national importance attached to the initiative.

Complementing the exposition were special exhibitions titled “Unearthing the Sacred Piprahwa” and “Sacred Relic and Cultural Engagement of Contemporary India.” These exhibitions showcased archaeological discoveries, shared Buddhist heritage and centuries-old civilisational connections between the two countries.

Strengthening India–Sri Lanka Spiritual Ties

The exposition had been announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his State Visit to Sri Lanka in April 2025. The initiative was envisioned as a bridge of faith and friendship rooted in shared Buddhist traditions.

Officials said the successful event has further strengthened people-to-people ties and reinforced India’s commitment to preserving and promoting Buddhist heritage worldwide. The safe return of the relics to India was carried out with reverence and ceremonial dignity.

With the conclusion of the exposition, a significant chapter in India–Sri Lanka spiritual engagement has come to a close. However, the cultural resonance and renewed goodwill generated by the event are expected to endure.
