DGCA Approves Chardham Yatra Helicopter Services Post-Monsoon

RR Team, September 19, 2025September 19, 2025
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has officially approved the recommencement of helicopter operations for the Chardham Yatra 2025 from 15–16 September, following the monsoon break. The decision comes with reinforced safety measures after thorough inspections of helipads, helicopters, and operational protocols.
Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, in coordination with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, led multiple review meetings in Dehradun and Delhi to ensure seamless collaboration between DGCA, Airports Authority of India (AAI), Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), and helicopter operators. Their joint efforts focus on zero-tolerance for safety lapses in high-altitude operations.

Enhanced Safety Measures for Pilgrims

Following a spate of helicopter accidents in May–June 2025, DGCA implemented a comprehensive set of safety initiatives. These include:

  • Pilot Qualification & Training: Mandatory route checks, recurrent high-altitude training, and deployment of only previously qualified pilots.
  • Airworthiness Oversight: Rigorous helicopter inspections and strict adherence to manufacturer-recommended maintenance schedules, with increased checks during peak operations.
  • Operational Safety: Enforcement of weight and balance limits, mandatory navigation and communication aids, and real-time weather updates for pilots.
  • Passenger Safety: Pre-flight safety briefings, use of seat belts, emergency procedures, and deployment of additional ground staff at helipads.
  • Regulatory Monitoring: On-ground DGCA monitoring teams, surprise inspections, and audits to ensure compliance with safety directives.

Chardham Helicopter Services Details

The Chardham Yatra helicopter operations comprise two main components:

  1. Charter Services: From Dehradun (Sahastradhara) to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, operated by seven helicopter operators or consortiums.
  2. Shuttle Services: From Guptkashi, Phata, and Sitapur to Shri Kedarnath Ji Helipad, handled by six operators.

These services are crucial for facilitating pilgrim movement to remote shrines in the high-altitude regions of Uttarakhand, ensuring both efficiency and safety.

Close Monitoring by Authorities

DGCA will maintain constant vigil over the operations, with Air Traffic Controllers (AAI) and Meteorological Officers (IMD) positioned at key locations. UCADA will manage control rooms staffed with qualified personnel, providing a robust monitoring framework.

With the recommencement of helicopter services, pilgrims can now expect a secure, timely, and reliable mode of transport for the revered Chardham Yatra shrines. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to combining religious tourism with the highest aviation safety standards.
