DGCA Removes Air India Officials Over Crew Scheduling Lapses

RR Team, June 21, 2025June 21, 2025

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has directed Air India to remove three key officials involved in crew rostering. This decision follows revelations of serious lapses in scheduling protocols and internal accountability.

🚨 Why Were the Officials Removed?

According to sources and a DGCA order reviewed by The Hindu, the regulator cited “systemic failure” in crew scheduling, compliance monitoring, and internal oversight. Violations included crew being assigned flights despite not meeting licensing, rest, or recency requirements.

🔍 Background: Software Change Uncovered the Lapses

The discrepancies were discovered during a performance review after Air India switched its crew scheduling software in May 2024. The update exposed multiple breaches of aviation norms that could have jeopardized passenger safety.

👤 Who Are the Officials Involved?

Among those removed is the Divisional Vice President of the Integrated Operations Control Centre (IOCC) — the nerve center of flight operations. The IOCC handles pilot and cabin crew scheduling, ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

🗣️ Air India Responds

Air India confirmed receiving the DGCA’s directive. A spokesperson said:

“We acknowledge the regulator’s directive and have implemented the order. In the interim, the company’s Chief Operations Officer will provide direct oversight to the IOCC. Air India is committed to safety and standard practices.”

⚖️ Disciplinary Action & DGCA Warning

The DGCA has ordered internal disciplinary proceedings against the officials. The regulator also warned that future violations may lead to licence suspension or operational restrictions.

✈️ Context: Ongoing Scrutiny After Boeing 787 Crash

This development comes just a week after the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash involving Air India, placing the airline under intense regulatory and public scrutiny. DGCA’s latest action signals a zero-tolerance policy toward safety violations.

🔚 Final Word

DGCA’s swift directive sends a strong message across the Indian aviation sector. As Air India continues its fleet expansion and operational overhaul, stricter oversight and crew compliance will be crucial to restoring passenger trust.
