Record-Breaking Ayodhya Deepotsav
Ayodhya’s Deepotsav emerged as a major highlight of Diwali 2025. UP Tourism, the Ayodhya administration, and the Saryu Arti Samiti set a world record with 2,128 devotees performing a simultaneous aarti, verified by Guinness officials. Additionally, an astonishing 26 lakh diyas were lit, illuminating the city in a spectacular display of devotion and heritage.
Delhi Faces Hazardous Air Pollution
While the festival brings joy, Delhi faces its recurring environmental challenge. On October 19, 2025, air quality in the National Capital Region plummeted to ‘very poor’ levels with an AQI of 400 in several areas. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) invoked GRAP stage 2 measures with immediate effect, restricting construction activities and monitoring industrial emissions to protect public health.
Experts attribute the haze to vehicular emissions, construction dust, industrial smoke, and burning of waste. Residents have been advised to limit outdoor activities and use masks to reduce exposure.
Dhanteras Shopping Boom
The festive season also turned into a record-breaking economic bonanza. According to traders’ body CAIT, Dhanteras alone saw shopping worth over Rs 1 lakh crore. Precious metals led the surge, with gold and silver purchases exceeding Rs 60,000 crore — a 25% increase compared to last year. Delhi alone accounted for sales exceeding Rs 10,000 crore, driven by demand for locally made products and post-GST consumer confidence.
Markets across India operated at full swing, with extended metro services, traffic diversions, and cultural programs complementing the shopping frenzy.
Yogi Adityanath’s Political Remarks in Ayodhya
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath used the occasion to launch a political dig at opposition parties. Speaking during Diwali preparations in Ayodhya, he stated that those who “fired bullets” at karsevaks during the Ram Mandir movement never participated in the temple’s grand opening in 2024. He further criticized the Samajwadi Party for keeping the city in darkness for years, emphasizing the contrast with current Diwali festivities.
Adityanath’s remarks have sparked debates across political circles, coinciding with the nation’s festival of lights, blending cultural celebration with political commentary.
Stock Market & Muhurat Trading
In line with Diwali traditions, the NSE and BSE will conduct a special one-hour Muhurat trading session on October 21. This year, the window runs from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm, allowing equities, futures, options, and derivatives trading in a festive, symbolic market session. Traders are already witnessing bullish sentiments amid the festival shopping surge.
