DoWR Secretary Reviews Farakka Barrage Project Progress

On 6th and 7th January 2026, Shri V. L. Kantha Rao, Secretary of the Department of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation (DoWR, RD & GR), Ministry of Jal Shakti, conducted an extensive two-day review of the Farakka Barrage Project (FBP) and its key components. The review focused on strengthening infrastructure, resolving bottlenecks, and ensuring the efficient operation of the barrage system.

Key Components Inspected

During the visit, Secretary Kantha Rao was accompanied by the Commissioner (FM) of DoWR, RD & GR, the General Manager of FBP, and other senior officers from the Central Water Commission (CWC) and Farakka Barrage Project.

The inspection covered the following critical components:

  • Main Farakka Barrage, Head Regulator, Fish Lock Gates, and associated structures.
  • Eroded portions of the 10th Marginal Embankment on the upstream left bank of the Ganga near Birnagar.
  • Navigational Lock at Farakka.
  • Feeder Canal and Jangipur Barrage.

Focus on Timely Completion and Efficient Operations

Secretary Kantha Rao reviewed the overall progress of ongoing works and emphasized the importance of strengthening and properly maintaining all components of the Farakka Barrage to fulfill its objectives effectively. He stressed the need for timely completion of priority works and proactive resolution of bottlenecks affecting project operations.

He further highlighted the modernization, maintenance, and operational efficiency of the barrage as key priorities, ensuring that infrastructure under the FBP functions at optimal levels.

Coordination with Local Authorities

During the visit, the Secretary also met with the District Collector (DC) and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of the region to seek their cooperation in addressing administrative matters. This collaboration is aimed at ensuring smooth execution of ongoing projects and efficient management of the barrage system.

Ministry’s Support and Future Plans

Concluding the visit, Secretary Kantha Rao assured full support from the Ministry of Jal Shakti for the development, operation, and management of the Farakka Barrage and its associated infrastructure. The Ministry remains committed to strengthening this vital water resource project, addressing challenges promptly, and ensuring sustainable operation for the benefit of downstream users and regional development.
