Interaction with Farmers and Industry Stakeholders
During his visit, Dr. Likhi engaged with shrimp farmers and entrepreneurs, listening to success stories and challenges in production, processing, and marketing. He also reviewed the Penaeus indicus Genetic Improvement Programme under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), aimed at developing genetically improved indigenous shrimp stocks.
The Secretary inspected ICAR-CIBA’s research facilities, including finfish, crustacean, ornamental fish, crab units, and the feed mill, gaining firsthand knowledge of research, innovation, and development in brackishwater aquaculture.
Strengthening Indigenous Shrimp Feed Ecosystem
Two significant Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during the visit:
- ICAR-CIBA & M/s Selle Hatchery Tech, Marakkanam: Commercialization of India’s first indigenous shrimp larval feed to reduce dependency on imports.
- ICAR-CIBA & M/s BRC Marine Products, Odisha: Use of rice-based Rice Distillers’ Dried Grains with Solubles (DDGS) as a cost-effective and sustainable protein source in shrimp feed.
The MoUs aim to promote self-reliance in feed production and optimize resource use, supporting climate-smart aquaculture practices.
AI, Drones, and Technology in Aquaculture
Dr. Likhi observed a live drone demonstration for feed spraying and transport. The Department of Fisheries is piloting drone applications across shrimp farms, aiming for precise and efficient feed delivery. These innovations are expected to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and integrate modern technology into traditional shrimp farming practices.
Focus on Exports and Market Growth
Shrimp remains India’s leading seafood export, constituting nearly 70% of total seafood exports to over 130 countries. Despite a 58% tariff imposed by the United States, the sector achieved a 21% growth in export value and a 12% increase in export volume from April–October 2025. Insights from the Secretary’s field engagement are expected to inform policy interventions that sustain growth in the fisheries sector.
Policy and Collaboration Emphasis
In a hybrid meeting with State and Union Territory officials, Dr. Likhi highlighted the importance of collaboration among research institutions, industry partners, and governments to ensure timely transfer of innovations to farmers. Presentations were delivered by Shri Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary (Inland), DoF; Dr. K.K. Lal, Director, ICAR-CIBA; and Dr. J.K. Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries), ICAR, while Dr. B.K. Behera, Chief Executive, NFDB, welcomed participants virtually.
